The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has, with immediate effect, suspended ZESCO United from the MTN Super League.
This follows ZESCO United’s legal action in court after their replacement in the ongoing 2026 ABSA Cup competition.
ZESCO’s action arises from the controversy surrounding their reverse fixture with Mutondo Stars, which was played in the first half of the season. However, during the ABSA Cup draws, the ZPL announced that the fixture was considered postponed, despite ZESCO having already reached the required threshold of 17 matches for ABSA Cup qualification.
The league then ordered ZESCO to replay the match against Mutondo Stars, which they lost, ultimately leading to them forfeiting their ABSA Cup slot to MUZA FC.
In a letter addressed to ZESCO United, the Zambian Premier League outlined the circumstances that led to the decision, confirming that the move was triggered by the club’s decision to pursue the matter through the courts.
“We write to formally inform you that the Football Association has received a court summons concerning the ongoing matter involving your club’s appeal.”
The league stated that it had already guided the club to resolve the dispute through internal football channels but noted that ZESCO proceeded otherwise, prompting disciplinary action in line with football governance rules.
“As you are aware, in our previous correspondence, your club was explicitly advised to refrain from referring football-related disputes to ordinary courts and to instead follow the established internal dispute resolution mechanisms. It has come to our attention that ZESCO United Football Club has not complied with this directive and has proceeded to engage the ordinary courts in this matter.”
ZPL further emphasized that the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place until the legal proceedings are concluded, with all of the club’s fixtures put on hold in the meantime.
“In light of this development, and in accordance with the FAZ Constitution and league regulations and governance principles, the Zambian Premier League has resolved to suspend ZESCO United Football Club from participation in the league with immediate effect. This suspension will remain in force until the court matter is fully resolved. Consequently, all upcoming fixtures involving ZESCO United Football Club are hereby suspended until further notice.”
The league also indicated that ZESCO United still has the right to appeal the decision through the appropriate structures, while urging the club to handle the matter with urgency and seriousness.
“Please be advised that your club reserves the right to appeal against this decision in line with the applicable rules and procedures. We trust that you will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take the necessary steps to resolve the situation promptly.”
