ZESCO United Miss Out on ABSA Cup After Defeat to Mutondo Stars

By Angela Bambala Bwalya

Defending champions ZESCO United have missed out on qualification for the 2026 ABSA Cup after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Mutondo Stars at Kafubu Stadium.

Sebastian Wasanga scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute with a powerful strike that sealed a hard-fought victory for Mutondo Stars and ended ZESCO’s hopes of defending their ABSA Cup title.

The match was a tense and closely contested affair, with both teams creating chances. Mutondo Stars had an opportunity to take the lead earlier in the second half but failed to convert from the penalty spot, with Levis Opiyo Omondi, the ZESCO United goalkeeper, making a crucial save to keep his side in the game at the time.

However, Mutondo Stars eventually found the breakthrough when Wasanga fired home in the 74th minute to settle the contest.

The result confirms that FC MUZA take the final ABSA Cup qualification slot, while ZESCO United’s difficult run of form continues, they have now suffered four straight defeats.

For Mutondo Stars, the victory lifts them out of the relegation zone to 13th place with 24 points. They are now unbeaten in their last seven league matches, recording three wins and four draws.

ZESCO United will now turn their attention to the highly anticipated “electricity derby” against Power Dynamos on March 8 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Power Dynamos currently lead the Zambia Super League table with 45 points and a game in hand, following their 3–0 victory over Green Buffaloes.

Result:

Mutondo Stars 1–0 ZESCO United

(Sebastian Wasanga 74’)
