Zesco United’s poor run of form has continued as they played out to a goalless draw against Nakambala Leopards this afternoon.
The hosts came into the match hoping to get back to winning ways following their elimination from the CAF Champions League.
Welcoming a team they had beaten eleven times in 13 meetings, George Lwandamina, and his side were favorites to carry the day. Zesco started the match strongly and restricted Nakambala to their own half in the opening ten minutes.
Nakambala slowly got back into the match and had the first meaningful chance, Junior Zulu found himself through on go in the 22nd minute with only Ian Otieno to beat but the Kenyan produced a fantastic save to keep the scores level at 0-0.
Nakambala continued to trouble the defending Champions with Patrick ‘Dudey’ Ngoma, Felix Bulaya and Gift Lukwesa combining well but could not find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes as the match went to the break level 0-0.
In the second half, Zesco came back more determined to and could have gone ahead eleven minutes after the restart but Mwape Mwelwa’s weak shot was easily cleared as he failed to make meaningful contact with the ball with only Lameck Nyangu to beat.
Nine minutes later John Ching’andu had a glorious chance with only Nyangu in his way but somehow he ballooned his effort.
Albert Mphande made a change withdrawing Junior Zulu and bringing on Lubinda Mundia.
The change made an immediate impact as Mundia did well to find his way into the box and threaded a cross into Patrick Ngoma’s path but the striker somehow slipped and fell and the ball passed just behind him.
Mundia was again in the thick of things shortly as he set up Felix Bulaya to score the opening goal of the match or so he thought as the first assistant referee raised his flag for offside.
0-0 the match ended with the two sides failing to move on the log.
In Mufulira, Green Buffaloes picked up a vital point away to leapfrog Lusaka Dynamos into 7th place with 30 points.
Mufulira Wanderers have now picked up two points in their last two games.
