Zanaco’s Malawi winger wins Player of the tournament

Sensational Zanaco winger Chawanangwa Kaonga was named as the player of the tournament at the 2023 COSAFA Championship. 

Kaonga led the Flames to a fourth place finish after they lost in the semifinals to Lesotho on post match penalties. 

Chawanangwa helped Malawi reach the semi-finals of the tournament after a 100 percent record in the group, scoring a goal, providing an assist and one Man of the Match Award.

He went on to also score from the penalty spot in the semi-final tie against Lesotho to take his tally to two goals for the tournament. 

Kaonga joined the Bankers as a free agent in February having previously played for Malawi TNM Super League side Silver Strikers in the 2022 soccer season.

Kaonga has also played for Mozambican sides Costa Do Sol FC and Clube Do Chibuto and TS Sporting in South Africa.

Fair Play Award – Malawi 🇲🇼

Man of the Match in the final – Moyela Libamba (Forest Rangers & Zambia 🇿🇲) 

Third Place – South Africa 🇿🇦

Runners up – Lesotho 🇱🇸

Champions – Zambia 🇿🇲 

👉The Chipolopolo have defended the trophy winning a record seventh title. 

👉 13th Cosafa Cup final appearance 

👉 16th appearance in the semi final 

👉 Zimbabwe and South Africa have won it 6th and 5th respectively
