Zanaco close in on Nkana with win over Arrows

Ten man Zanaco made easy work of Red Arrows to win 2 – 0 at home and move to within one point of leaders Nkana who play tomorrow.

Red Arrows started well and were the first to threaten but Zanaco 2nd choice goalie Toaster Nsabata who was standing in for Racha Kola who is out on national duty.

Zanaco went ahead in the 10th minute when Saith Sakala who was making only his second start for Zanaco rose high to connect with a Rodrick Kabwe cross from the left in the 10th minute.

Zanaco dominated the proceedings with Sakala, Kabwe and Isaac Chansa looking a cohesive force going forward.

Defender Aaron Katebe was sent off 12 minutes into the second half for a second bookable offence after referee Gladys Lengwe judged that the ball hit his hand when he dropped his shoulder to stop the ball.

Arrows then went all out to pull back a goal, looked vulnerable everytime the ‘bankers’ counter attacked.

Substitute Logic Chingandu who came in for Chansa made a run from midfield into the box under pursuit from the defenders. A last ditch tackle on him from behind saw the referee point to the spot in the 75th minute.

Outstanding midfielder Rodrick Kabwe stepped up to blast past Kenny Mumba in the Arrows goal.

Zanaco finished strong and could have added another in the dying minutes after a neat exchange of passes saw Sakala find himself free in the six yard box but he failed to strike.

Zanaco are now a point behind Nkana on 25 points with both teams having played 11 games.

Elsewhere in Lusaka, Napsa Stars managed to hold Green Buffaloes 1 – 1 to give new coach Tenant Chilumba a boost.

Brian Mwila scored for the hosts while Martin Tembo equalized for Napsa.

Napsa remain in the relegation zone while Buffaloes drop into 6th position after being overtaken by Power Dynamos who won 4 – 0 against Mufulira Blackpool yesterday.

In Kabwe, Godfrey Ngwenya scored his second goal of the season to help Kabwe Warriors win 1 – 0 over Green Eagles.

Nchimunya Munene’s goal saw Mighty Mufulira Wanderers leap into 8 th position from 13th when they beat visiting Nakambala Leopards.

  3. Zanaco seem to be going about their business quietly & no one is taking note at the moment by the time we all realise they will be gunning for the title! We had better pay attention to these xapit boys!!
