Zanaco advance to the group stage despite a late scare

Zanaco advanced to the 2021/22 CAF Confederations Cup group stage despite suffering a defeat to Binga in Mali via a 3-2 aggregate.

Youssou Coulibaly scored a brace for Binga.

The bankers conceded two late goals against the Malian second tier side to give a nail biting end to the match.

Zanaco coach Kelvin Kaindu made one change from the side which started the 3-0 first leg win a week ago.

Boyd Musonda replaced Eric Owusu in midfield.

Goalkeeper Lameck Siame got the nod ahead of Congolese Charles Lawu while veteran Ziyo Tembo was paired with Isaac Shamujompa.

Rising star Emmanuel Manda continued his partnership with Moses Phiri.

With the match heading for draw, Coulibaly stunned the Zambians with a well taken goal in the 80th minute.

In injury time, Binga were awarded a penalty which Coulibaly scored to make it 2-0.

But it was a late surge as Zanaco booked a group stage place.

With Red Arrows losing 4-2 on aggregate, Zanaco will be the country’s only representative in Africa.

Zesco United and Green Eagles were eliminated in the early stages.

Zanaco XI v Binga: Lameck Siame; John Mwewa, Ziyo Tembo, Isaac Shamujompa, Peter Kalota; Kelvin Kapumbu, Boyd Musonda, Moussa Souleymanou (Chisamba Lungu 82′); Moses Phiri, Emmanuel Manda, Abraham Siankombo (John Sikaumbwe 62′)
