Zambia survive a scare to earn a point in Namibia

A late equaliser from substitute Justin Shonga earned Zambia a point against Namibia in the Cameroon 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier.

As expected, it was a new look Chipolopolo starting line-up with old faces in what was coach Sven Vandebroeck’s first match as coach.

The Chipolopolo struggled to stamp their authority on the game in the first quarter of the game as they were being rushed by the visitors with a high press.

However, the Namibians were also not doing enough to trouble skipper Kennedy Mweene in the Zambia goal who had an easy game in the first half with strong cover from a solid back four marshaled by Stopilla Sunzu and Kabaso Chongo at heart of the defense.

Zambia’s best chance fell to Rainford Kalaba who started a move deep in the Namibian half and found Augustine Mulenga on the right. His cross was however headed over the bar with only the keeper to beat by Kalaba who was arriving in the box.

Zambia were creating more in the second half and should have gone ahead when Fashion Sakala saw his half volley canon off the upright from a Solomon Sakala cross before Mulenga made a glaring miss when he controlled the ball well in the box but only managed to balloon his effort over the bar in the 66th minute.

Namibia then went ahead in the 78th minute with a well worked goal that saw the Zambian defense split for the first time with some good movement and substitute Benson Shilongo tapped in under pressure.

Sven reacted by bringing in Justin Shonga immediately and Enock Mwepu with 7 minutes to play for Patson Daka and Salulani Phiri who had a good game respectively.

Mwepu was the game-changer in the midfield and Zambia were playing on the front foot in the closing minutes attacking in waves.

The break only came in injury time when Shonga saw his freekick from outside the box deflect off the head of the defender to beat the otherwise excellent Virgil Vries who had earlier kept out Lubambo Musonda with a brilliant one handed save at full stretch.

In the other game in the group, Mozambique were held 2 – 2 at home by Guinea Bissau leaving the latter in pole position.

The result leaves both teams stuck at the bottom of Group K with only a point to show after two games while Mozambique and Guinea Bissau both have 4 points after the same number of games.

Zambia next host Guinea Bissau in Lusaka at the National Heroes stadium on 10th October, 2018.

  1. Poor tactics poor starting eleven.. Why play two defensive midfielders?? Why put Mwepu on the bench?? A player from injury starting how why?? We can’t have two wingbacks in one game the likes of Chungu and Solomon??those days are gone old tactics..why player Dana alone upfront when we have red hot strikers like Kambole and Shonga?? Can’t never! Advise this coach if this continues forget qualification!! Check the level Moz and Guinea b. are can we beat them???

    • Imwe Ba Pundit,
Did you even watch game? It was 60% possession by Zambia. There was no player you could underrate or blame. The only guy or position which shocks me is playing Fashion ku 11.
      – Solomon was best, if not Kabaso. Solomon was taking ball up to box.

      – Lawrence was disciplined, he never made no mistake. He stayed back, below center line.
Now am convinced that Kabaso is the central defender, excellent.
Solomon reminds me of Tana, the boy is smart and positive vibes.
Captain Mweene, no comment, he just have to speed up game, stop telling players to calm-down, relax for what reason. Lets play. But Mweene will make a great coach mwee.

There is no team who will ever beat this Chipolopolo.

One wonders playing salulani phiri ahead of mwepu
Everyone could see that fashion sakala is more of personal glory
Kambole could have done more than fashion
Cletus could have been more effective than mulenga
    Kalaba still has football brains
Mweene is also a big problem that’s why he is not playing at Sundowns he concedes silly goals
The abundance of talent that was at the technical bench one wonders why we can not even at least dominate the game
Maybe its a bad omen of mbola’s dismissal from teach
Otherwise kalu has gone with all necessary tools for qualifying for afcon

    • What dominance you want, it was 60% Zambia possession. FIFA statistics.

      Even Fashion was ok.

Defenders can rejoice because there is no competition.
Did you see substitutes, only 1 defender, Samunjopa. There was:
      – Mwepu
      – Shonga
      – Lubambo
      – Cletus
      – Gampani
The best wingers didn’t even make bench:
      – Bruce Musakanya
      – Nsautu

      Kuli bola uku Yama…

  3. Parson Daka should have been partnered with Shonga..Augustine should not have been in the starting eleven Samjopa should have partnered Sunzu then Chongo on the right fullback position,Sinkala should have started with Mwepu then bench Salulani phiri…The coach had tactical blunders slow to make subs??

    • Just stop naimwe
How many lineups did we make?
Even the lineup today we suggested it yesterday.
@Pundit what you want us to say, we can defend all players, because we watched the game. Lets just continue drinking guys, bola was good!! Fulustop.
      Naya ku website Yandi.

    • i support you Pundit I watched the game and saw some gaps as you pointed out! Let us not just sing praises to the Coach when He is wrong he is wrong, He made errors in his tactical approach.

  4. Fashion Sakala Is Useless, Spence Sautu Is Much Better Than This Fool, This Coach Costed Us This Game, The First 11 Line Up Shud Have Patson Daka, Shonga And Kambole Upfront Then Mid Mwepu, nathan And Kalaba, Surely We Wud Have Beaten Namibia Convincingly, The Coach And Other Zambian Technical Bench Malabish, Lubambo Is Much Better Than Fashion And Augustine Mulenga,
