Yes it’s a formality match for Algeria but with an unbeaten record at stake

Algeria will be playing a formality match this evening when they take on Zambia at the National Heroes Stadium on matchday five of the 2021 Cameroon AFCON qualifiers having already sealed their qualification.

The Desert Foxes will also be without six players but they have something very important to fight for, an unbeaten run stretching from as far back as 2018.

The defending African champions are riding a 22-match unbeaten streak, the Desert Foxes have not lost a match since a 1-0 loss to Benin back in October 2018.

Since their loss to Benin, Algeria has gone on an incredible 22-match unbeaten streak, winning 17 games and drawing 5, while outscoring their opponents by 30 goals (43 goals scored, 13 goals conceded).

Algeria is chasing Brazil’s 35 matches unbeaten run which came between 1993 and 1996.

  1. Brazil (1993 to 1996) – 35 games
  2. Spain (2007 to 2009) – 35 games
  3. Argentina (1991 to 1993) – 31 games
  4. Italy (1935 to 1939) – 30 games
  5. France (1994 to 1996) – 30 games
  6. West Germany (1978 to 1981) – 23 games
  7. France (2010 to 2012) – 23 games
  8. Algeria (2018 to present) – 22 games

They however face a Zambia side determined to turn around their fortunes in the qualifiers having only managed to get three points from four matches and desperate for a win to keep their hopes of making it to an AFCON tournament for the first time since 2015 alive.

Zambia will host Algeria at the National Heroes Stadium at 21:00 CAT. The game will be live on the National Broadcaster, ZNBC.

The Copper Bullets will wrap up the qualifiers with an away fixture against Zimbabwe on Monday next week.
