Yesterday #CAF paid tribute to a giant of African football, #PierreNdayeMulamba, with a minute’s silence, and rightly so.
But what about the other 8 former African greats who have passed away since November 2016? Don’t they deserve such respect too?
#AdDiba, #LaurentPokou, #KenBanda, #FuseiniSalifu, #JohnEshun, #PhilMasinga, #StoneChibwe, #DicksonMakwaza
AFCON has not honored them, and with reference to Mohamed Diab al-Attar (Ad Diba), he is the first AFCON legend. His record of 4 goals in an AFCON final (1957 has not been equaled.
He read the 1968 final.
The current AFCON is in Egypt, the country he represented. He is the first AFCON legend, yet nothing has been done to honor him at an AFCON.
Dickson Makwaza is the only legend to die during this AFCON. He is a Zambian great. He captained Zambia for a remarkable 9 years. He took over in defense from the late Ken Banda, the only one of the 8 not to have been to an Africa Cup of Nations – he had retired before Zambia qualified for an AFCON Finals
Makwaza captained Zambia in 1974 – the same AFCON that Mulamba set the record of 9 goals in one AFCON Finals. Zambia reached the final – the only one in AFCON history that required a replay. The 1974 AFCON was also in Egypt, one of the reasons CAF opted to honor Mulamba here.
Makwaza is an AFCON legend, not just a Zambian one. He deserves to be honored here.
