Wedson Nyirenda drops Lubambo, Katongo in squad to play Nigeria

New Zambia national team interim coach Wedson Nyirenda has named a 33 man provisional squad that will go in camp for the 2018 Russia World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

There are not many changes to Nyirenda’s team from that of his predecessor George Lwandamina though he had recalled want-away midfielder Chisamba Lungu of Russian side Ural and Fwayo Tembo who plays for Power Dynamos.

Lawrence Chungu and Billy Mutale are the other two new inclusions in the team.

‘Wadda has also dropped 2012 Afcon winning skipper Christopher Katongo who was initially axed by Honor Janza but made a return in the past year under Lwandamina.

Zamalek striker Emmanuel Mayuka also continues to miss in the team as well as Armenia based Lubambo Musonda.

  1. Great to see some new talent especially in shaky back and mid positions. I hope Chisamba and Fwayo will be magnanimous enough to accept the call for country duty, I hope the coach has been wise enough to make that ‘pampering’ phone call to them. sometimes we all need a bit of begging for, no harm.

  2. he shud drop George chilufya too slow, donashano malama too strong for nothing, Richard kasonde n jack chirwa nt skillful enough, partson daka z scoring bt nt yet at National team level let’s nt rush him and Justin shonga lacks experience for such levels. And the starting lineup should b mwene(1) silwimba(2) ziyo(4) sunzu(5) chungu(3) chaila(6) chisamba(8) fwayo(7) kalaba(11) mbesuma(9) and kalengo(10) well dats my own opinion….

  3. All the best to boys who have made the provision list work extra hard to earn a first eleven team. Chipolopolo iyeee let’s gooooooooal

  4. Am not comfortable on the defensive part this qualifies we will be playing are very important. the players like Mbola or nkausu are required.

  5. No paul katema, mkandawire and chepeshi, atleast this coach can see who is not national team material and who is not performing and adding value like lubambo the boys imisonko yaba .

  6. Goalkeepers: Carl Ikeme (Wolverhampton Wanderers, England); Emmanuel Daniel (Enugu Rangers); Ikechukwu Ezenwa (FC IfeanyiUbah)

Defenders: Leon Balogun (FSV Mainz 05, Germany); William Troost-Ekong (Haugesund FC, Norway); Chidozie Awaziem (FC Porto, Portugal); Jamiu Alimi (Kano Pillars); Abdullahi Shehu (Uniao da Madeira, Portugal); Musa Muhammed (Istanbul Basaksehir, Turkey); Elderson Echiejile (AS Monaco, France), Kingsley Madu (AS Trencin, Slovakia)

  7. @Samuel, you are only guessing Nigerian squad. New scoring talents are being invited. Legend goalkeeper Enyeama is coming out of retirement. Zambia can’t escape defeat. Zambia can’t stop Nigeria, nor Algeria and Cameroon. We are coming for all of you obstacles.

    • Did you watch them play Taifa stars just a week or so ago in Nigeria? Football is played on the pitch.Support yours let them support theirs.

  8. The biggest problem with our team in recent years has been our defenders and central midfield. We need a partner for Sunzu, Chama is too slow, chilufya come on. I would even prefer Munthali (I cant believe I am putting him forward as an option which indicates how bad our options are) or even Francis Kasonde, or maybe even one of the Charly Musonda sons (not charly) should be tried. Central midfield is another sore point. Get Isaac Chansa back in that team as well. Who will partner Sinkala – Chaila? Jack Chirwa? Lets be serious…

  9. Wish the boys well. We are in a very tough Group.(Group of Death) All our opponents have been to the W.C a couple of times. It will take a miracle to come out tops of this Group.

Algeria are clear favourites in this Group.

  10. LOOOOL. IS this all you guys have to offer? LOOOL.
WE will beat you in your backyard, then bury you guys in Nigeria.

  11. This is not the first time we’re facing a star studed team with all of the players plying their trades in Europe including technical, medical and CAF staff. We have come victorious when the football world is expecting less with two or three players playing abroad. But you the Super Eagles all the games have won against us were all fair. I remind you to prepare yourself for shock defeat at the expense of less fancied Chipolopolo.

  12. Zambia is only national team that do NOT call over seas based players. Mayuka in CL final, kola 8 years in Europe, Kangwa bought in millions to Turkey, Chamanga, Lubambo, Mbola… We are only ones that prefer players from Congo, Sudan a Africa… Maybe is cause FAZ wants to sell new players but even that they do NOT do. I think Kamanga wasn’t beaten for nothing!
Long live King Kalu! We need u back!

  13. This team is really lacking in terms of quality players. Our best players on this list are Sunzu (not getting game time), Kalaba (who really needs to find a way to lead as Captain and get the best out of his teammates), Mbesuma (them old legs still score, but are not built for 90 minutes), Kalengo (who can remember the last time the man scored), Mweene (bench warmer), and why oh why is Fwayo Tembo in this team? I hope and pray Wedson knows what he is doing.

  14. I’m disapointed with the team selection is it FAZ who is chosen players or its the coach?our opponent nigeria have called all they best players but here our new coach is calling useless players like shonga. this is not cosafa cup you fools but its a world cup qualifying game.we need player like chamanga who is scoring in china,Evans kangwa, mbola, muthali faz listern to the voice of reason
