Vandenbroeck: FIFA Rankings puts Zambia as favourites! Even though circumstances favour Namibia

Chipolopolo Boys coach Sven Vandenbroeck has said Zambia will go into September 7, Cameroon 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia as favourites according to FIFA rankings but the Brave Warriors hold the advantage.

And the Belgian coach has confirmed as earlier revealed by the ZamFoot Crew that the Chipolopolo Boys will play Gabon in a friendly match on September 11.

“If we go and look at the CAF or FIFA ranking, then we are the favourites because we are the highest ranked of all four in our group but circumstances are in favour of Namibia,” the former Cameroon assistant coach said.

“The reason is that they scheduled the game on an artificial field, they have had a six week camp to prepare for the game and they play at home.

“That is why I see a light advantage for them in the game. That does not mean we will not do everything to win because it is in all our good to bring the three points home.”

Despite Zambia being a regional powerhouse with 17 African Cup of Nations appearances, the Chipolopolo Boys have struggled against Ricardo Manetti’s Brave Warriors in the last four years.

With both sides losing on match day 1, pressure is on Vanderbroeck and Manetti to collect maximum points in Windhoek.

While the Chipolopolo Boys will be in action against Namibia, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau will battle it out for group supremacy.

A defeat for either Zambia or Namibia might see them six points off the group leaders.

And because of that background, Vandenbroeck is aware that it’s a must win encounter for either side.

“I think it is a very important game for both of us. It is a must win for both. We are both at zero points, so if we want to have a chance to qualify, we both have to win,” he said.

The away match Windhoek will be the Belgian coach’s first competitive game as Chipolopolo coach.
