Throwback Thursday – WO1 Katongo against Egypt

Christopher Katongo has had an illustrious career for the Chipolopolo playing at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

The Chipolopolo skipper captained Zambia at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations tournament when Zambia won gold and is still leading Zambia’s charge for gold at the 2016 Rwanda CHAN tournament. In 2012 he was the AFCON Most Valuable Player and was later in the year voted as the BBC Africa Footballer of the year.

His national team career spuns over 12 years yet the Zambia Army Warrant Office Class 1 continues to go strong with impressive performances at the Rwanda tournament.

He came to prominence when he played for Green Buffaloes in Zambia and later featured for Jomo Cosmos (South Africa), Brondby (Denmark), Arminia Bielefeld (Germany), Xanthi (Greece), Henan Jianye (China), Golden Arrows ) South Africa)and Bidvits Wits (South Africa) before returning home to Buffaloes.

Which game was the ‘Tsunami’ playing in the picture above? Which was Katongo’s first game for Zambia?

  1. Katongo’s main strength is his never-say-die attitude. He plays like the soldier he really is out of the pitch. It always amazes me how he out-jumps much taller defenders…and he is always a thorn in their flesh. A true indomitable lion!

  2. Katongo’s first senior game for Zambia came in the World Cap preliminary match against Seychelles at Independence stadium which ended 1-1. Zambia went through having won 4-0 in the away game.

    • Don’t let Kalu hear you say this “he is a legend indeed. only zambian skipper to have won afcon”. Only Kalu should be recognized as the legend.

  3. Captain FANTASTIC Christopher Katongo for me is the most disciplined and committed captain we have ever had in more than 50 years!!! His passion and commitment to the national team over the years has been unquestionable; it’s second to none!!!!

Claudio Ranieri says Daniel Amartey’s versatility will be a big asset for Leicester City during the second half of the Barclays Premier League season.
Amartey, 21, completed a move to Leicester from FC Copenhagen last week, boosting Ranieri’s squad with further strength and quality.
The Ghana international was not involved in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Stoke City, but will hit the training ground in preparation for a challenging sequence that sees the league leaders face Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in the coming weeks.
And Ranieri says his newest recruit’s adaptability make him an important addition to his squad.
“It’s good to have one player that can permit me to change something during the match,” Claudio said.
“He’s a good player, strong, with good quality, a hard worker and he has our spirit.
“He is a strong man and he can play in a lot of positions. He can play centre-back, right-back, central midfield and right midfield.
“It’s important for me to have another very good young player.”

  5. Both Felix and Chris caught fire in the match, we don’t have new players who can do that in the current team… The only game Egypt drew on their way to the Trophy. Probably one of the only games Egypt drew in their years victory reign as Afcon champions. Terrible tournament for Zambia but it showed the building blocks for the future.
