The two games will help us fine tune for WAFCON – Katongo

Zambia Women’s National Team midfielder Evarine Susan Katongo believes the two international friendly matches against Botswana and South Africa will help the Copper Queens fine tune for WAFCON.

Katongo feels the international friendly matches will help the Copper Queens give the team an idea of what to expect at the WAFCON and a chance to work on the mistakes.

“We are looking to win the game because we are preparing for WAFCON. It won’t be easy at WAFCON so these friendlies will give us the picture of that tournament. These games will give us an idea on how the WAFCON will be. They will also help us work on our mistakes,” Katongo said.

The team has a lot of competition according to the Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club midfield ace making the training sessions interesting.

“Everyone is putting in a lot of effort. Everyone is showing that we want to win the game. It was a tough session because we have so much competition, we are competing against each other,” she said.

“It feels good with the foreign players being part of the team. It’s a morale booster and gives us the local players confidence. It is good to have the entire team in camp.”

Yesterday the team held a training session at Clapham High School in Queenswood, Pretoria, ahead of Saturday’s three-nation series fixture against the Mares of Botswana set for  Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium.

The match will kick-off at 15h00, with live coverage on all of SABC Sport platforms.

Zambia will wrap up the series with a face-off against Banyana Banyana on Tuesday, 3 June.
