The rise of Theresa Chewe

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Women’s Super League log leaders Green Buffaloes Women Football Club has been unstoppable in this Inaugural Women’s National League posting excellent results winning 15 games, drawing 1 and losing 2 games, and currently leading the table with 46 points from 18 games played, 4 better than second-placed ZESCO Ndola Girls.

One of the outstanding performers and arguably the best striker currently in the league is Theresa Chewe who plays as a striker for the Zambia Army Sponsored side.

Chewe has scored 20 goals out of the 48 which the team has posted overall and of course, Buffaloes is the only team with the least number of goals conceded (6) in the league.

She is just 3 goals behind current top goal scorer Grace Chanda from Red Arrows.

Born on 27th November 1997, Chewe started her football career 11 years ago playing for St. Peter’s Academy from 2010 to 2012 before she joined Red Arrows in 2013, and in the same year, she was part of the Airtel Rising Stars Team that traveled to Nigeria.

Chewe was with Red Arrows until 2014 thereafter she moved to the Copperbelt Province and settled with Indeni Roses in 2015 until 2018.

During her stint with Indeni, Chewe won 2 league titles with the Oilo Ladies which even saw her receiving her first National Team Call-up.

She was part of the 2018 Copper Queens team that traveled to South Africa and Ghana at the COSAFA Women’s Championship and Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Tournament.

Later in 2019, Chewe came back to Lusaka and Joined Green Buffaloes Women Football Club and in the same year, she won The Women’s League and also the Charity Shield which was the league opener with Buffaloes who edged her former club Indeni Roses 5-4 via penalties after a 1-1 draw at Sunset Stadium.

Chewe continued with her excellent performance and she earned another call up to the national team in 2019 at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa where the Copper Queens minted Silver after losing 1-0 to South Africa in the final.

In 2020, Chewe won the first-ever National Women’s Championship with Buffaloes who defeated their sister club Queens Academy 9-0 in the final, and before that the Zambia Army Side edged Indeni Roses 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the semi-final at Nkoloma Stadium which was a replica of the 2019 Charity Shield final.

Chewe was also part of the Coach Bruce Mwape drilled lasses who made history by qualifying to the first-ever Rescheduled 2020 Olympics that was hosted by Japan this year.

Buffaloes were picked as Zambian Champions at the 2021 Inaugural TotalEnergies COSAFA Women’s Champion League in South Africa which was acted as Qualifier for the CAF Club Champions League and saw Buffaloes losing out to eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the semi-finals.
