The return of Ngambo Musole – The darling of Santiago

By Moses Pedro Mwanza

Copper Queens goalkeeper Ngambo Petronella Musole has been going hard in training with Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club as they are currently preparing for the third edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers.

The 2023 tournament will be held in Durban, South Africa from August 30th – September 8th, 2023.

Ngambo is definitely among the goalkeepers Buffaloes will be relying on as the team head to South Africa in a fortnight’s time in a quest to defend their CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Zone Trophy which they won last year.

This will be Buffaloes’ third appearance at the Competition having been to every tournament since its inception in 2021.

Whilst at Buffaloes under the watchful eye of goalkeeper Coach Bornface Banda, Musole has been drilled and so far accounting very well for herself both in training and friendly matches.

She has continued the race to regain her full fitness and this gives a lot of Women football enthusiasts excitement as they eagerly anticipate to see the Choma Warriors and Tamanga Academy product return to the National Team set-up.

The Copper Queens have a busy calendar coming up starting with 2024 Morocco Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers, COSAFA Women’s Championship and 2024 Paris Olympic Qualifiers later this year.

Musole won the hearts of fans in her debut for the Copper Queens on 28th November, 2020 during an international friendly match between Chile and Zambia where she put up an excellent shift with good saves.

From that match people dubbed her ‘The Darling Of Santiago’, the capital of Chile which hosted the friendly match which ended 2-1 in favour of The Copper Queens who came from a goal down with goals from Barbra Banda and Racheal Nachula enough to secure a historical victory while Karen Araya scored the only goal for La Roja Feminina.

A few months after the Chile friendly match, Musole went on to feature for the Copper Queens’ unfortunate 3-1 defeat at the hands of South Africa in another friendly match before she was a late inclusion in the Coach Bruce Mwape’s squad that qualified to the first ever Olympics 2020 Tokyo Olympics which were eventually rescheduled to 2021 as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19.

Unfortunately a year later, Musole was out of action due to personal reasons, missing out on the 2022 Morocco WAFCON tournament and only returned to the pitch earlier this year making a switch from ZESCO Ndola Girls to FAZ Women’s Super Division defending champions Green Buffaloes.

Musole was part of the Zambia Women’s Under-17 National Team that qualified and competed at the  2014 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
