The last game before the Gabon Air disaster

By Chiti Chitundu

30 Years ago, Zambia beat Mauritius by 3 goals to nil thanks to goals from Kelvin Mutale and he lives up to his promise of being on the score sheet.

This victory, this match is the last game that these players, these souls will ever play in their lives, little do they know they are playing a farewell game and they end it in style.

It is the last time they were putting on the Zambia national team jersey. This is the last football game that Godfrey Chitalu and Alex Chola ever presided over.

They immediately started making preparations to fly back to Zambia in readiness for the Senegal trip which was a much tougher assignment.

The team leaves hours later and are scheduled to be joined by Philemon Chisala, Aggrey Chiyangi, Evans Sakala, Ackson Shimbala, Martin Mwamba and Andrew Tembo at Masiye Motel in Lusaka.

This victory was good news for Zambia and the nation was elated by this result especially that Zimbabwe pulled a draw in South Africa a day before this match.
