The Alex Ng’onga factor vital in Nkana’s resurgence

Football is a funny Sport as one player who may be deemed surplus, not good enough or a flop at one club may shine at another club simply by making a move and playing under different conditions.

The famous Bible verse Psalm 118:22-23, says “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the LORD had done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.”

This has been the story of striker Alex Ng’onga who could not find game time at Arthur Davies Stadium under Perry Mutapa despite being a cult hero among the Power Dynamos fans. He then made a short trip to Scrivener, joining Power’s arch-rivals Nkana.

Bazo as he is fondly referred to has taken things personally since he arrived at Nkana, providing the defending Champions with a target man, a fighter (figuratively and at times literally), and most importantly a goal scorer.

The former Nchanga Rangers forward has netted 8 goals in his 12 appearances for the record 13 time Zambia Super League champions, recording a goal at least every 130+ he is on the pitch.

He has scored some important goals including a brace against Buildcon, a goal against ZESCO United in the one-nil win to end their ten-match-winning run. He also scored in the derby against his former side and an important spectacular backheel to force a draw against ZANACO in the dying minutes at Sunset Stadium.

When he made his Nkana debut on 24th April Nkana was 17th on the table with 21 points from 20 games and after his arrival and twelve games later they are 15th with 41 points. They have managed almost the same point tally they had in 21 games in the 12 games they have had Ng’onga on their books.

With the final round of matches set to take place on Sunday and Nkana needing at least a point to survive relegation but with huge dependency on what will happen in games that involve Indeni and Young Green Eagles, Beston Chambeshi will once again need his newly found good luck charm to be at his best to save Nkana from the embarrassment of relegation.

It’s truly been a remarkable comeback story for the 2013 COSAFA Cup winner who now sits on 9 goals for the season having scored one goal for Abayellow before making his switch.

  1. National team material. If all players are picked on merit alex ngonga should be called up. His scoring rate is excellent.

  2. Totally agree. He also has a great fighting spirit, a highly motivated individual. A team with that kind of motivation is destined for great things

  3. Alex ngonga is one of the best strikers we have currently in Zambia. Hope coach micho will take him into consideration for the coming Cosafa as we prepare for the world cup qualifiers.
