Stopilla Sunzu plays as Lille go down to PSG

Stopilla Sunzu was on Friday evening in action for his Ligue 1 team Lille when they lost to second placed PSG.

Sunzu was making only his third appearance and first start in the league for the 16th placed team and he was placed at the heart of defence against the formidable PSG attack led by Angel Di Maria, Moura and E Cavani.

The 27 year old Chipolopolo defender was unlucky to see his header goal from a corner go off target in the first half just before the half time break.

It was a tough evening for the Lille backline who were eventually undone by a good chested first touch by Cavani to create his space and fire home from close range in the 64th minute despite Sunzu desperately trying to recover. Di Maria provided the assist.

The Zambian international was substituted in the 80th minute after putting in a good shift.

The towering defender will be key for Zambia when they travel to Limbe to play Cameroon in the 2018 Russia World Cup qualifier.

  1. Bitter sweet news, bitter in that his team lost but sweet in terms of our best defender getting game time just before the crucial world cup qualifier.

  2. Elsewhere in Algeria Kalaba leads TP tonight as captain in the first leg of the CAF cup final against MOB. Chongo starts at left back, Sinkala in front of defenders and Kalaba (c) will be the conductor.

    • Ya, that’s what I saw…Kalaba proudly wore the captain’s armband…and gave it to the Central defender when he got substituted. Sinkala also got replaced. Match ended 1-1; TP scored first.

  3. This is good. Both Mweene and Sunzu got some game time this week.

What is happening with Mayuka? That move Southampton just derailed what was an amazing career. I honestly wish he had stayed at Young Boys in the Swiss league.

  4. Good to have him rubbing shoulders with some of the worlds best players, Di Maria and of PSG’s top players. It will do his game good. I see the coach rewarding his hardwork off/on the pitch.

  5. Long time since I was here! Are the wailers still alive? They appear to be the same negative clique on Lusaka Times! How is the new coach or other coaches doing for Zambia? Oh, I forgot! “It is the award-winning coach’s fault!”
