South Africa humiliate Zambia U17 in COSAFA openerĀ

The Zambia U17 National team were handed a humiliating 4-0 defeat by South Africa.

Amajimbos defeated the double defending Champions in their opening match in Group B at the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Harare on Friday.

South Africa, who enjoyed the support of Zimbabwean fans, came out strong against Zambia at the Ngoni Mwos Stadium, scoring three goals in the first half while the fourth through an own goal in the second half.

They opened the scoring in just the second minute when Omphemetse Sekgoto found the net with a fine strike. The pressure kept building, and in the 26th minute Mpho Molepo calmly slotted home a penalty to double the lead.

Ten minutes later, South Africa scored their third goal, leaving champions, Zambia, with a mountain to climb.

The Zambian defence couldn’t match the game’s pace, and their attackers failed to make an impact. In their confusion, they gave away an own goal to South Africa, scored by captain Emmanuel Mbuti.

The other match in group B saw Malawi start their tournament brightly, managing a 3-1 win over Madagascar in their Group B opener.

Next up for the Young Copper Bullets is a clash against neighbors Malawi on Sunday.
