Singuluma should not play in the midfield – Chris Katongo

Former Chipolopolo captain Christopher Katongo says he is surprised that Chipolopolo coach Honour Janza has continued to play striker Given Singuluma in the midfield when he is a striker.

Katongo who was a panelist on the Carol Tshabalala anchored Supersport post match analysis program, Katongo said Singuluma could better be utilized up the field partnered with another striker.

“I am surprised also [that Singuluma was played in the midfield]. Singuluma is a striker and always plays as a striker. I don’t know why the coach changed to play him in the middle and paired him with Sinkala,” Katongo said.

“But tactically if it works for him and works for the nation, it’s not a problem. But if doesn’t work, we need to speak about it, if he [Honor Janza] can listen maybe he can change. But he needs to concentrate on what he wants tactically,” he added.

“Otherwise Singuluma can play forward with any of the strikers, Mayuka or Evans, they can partner there especially for the coming games,” the celebrated former BBC Africa Footballer of the year said.

Katongo also expressed pessimism at Zambia’s chances against Tunisia stating that the Chipolpolo will be under pressure as history weighs against them.

“Even Zambians know about it, no doubt about it, North African teams give us problems.”

“Zambia against Tunisia they will have the pressure in this game for sure I will go for my country, we need the points. We should have collected maximum points and see what happens against Tunisia,” Katongo said.

Zambia play Tunisia on Thursday.

  1. Janza should realize that this is afcon tournament,, not time for experiments. But i still have hope that we will improve in the next game. But Mbola!!! Why not safety first, alitwipaisha even DRC had many chances!

  2. Zambia needs a 4 2 3 1 formation. Janza needs to push Kondwani in midfield to assist Sinkala. He should bring Munthali to partner Sunzu in central defence.

In the next game Lubambo Musonda and Evans Kangwa should start ahead of Chisamba and Mayuka respectively. Mayuka should be brought in in the second half as an impact player. In my view Evans Kangwa is better than Sate Sate. Sate Sate should not start ahead of Kangwa. Chisamba makes too many mistakes in the midfield and loses possession so easily. We have been expecting a lot from Chisamba but has not lived up to our expectations. Lubambo should start ahead of him, and only come in when the youngster shows signs of weariness. Singuluma should play as a second striker just in front of the main striker.
We need pace/speed in the team and this is the only way we are going to beat the North Africans.

  3. whilst Janza did not do justice to the game, Katongo was speaking out of bitterness. He failed once again to show some sense of maturity , he hoped Zambia lost for his own personal image, nobody is above the nation. in moments we stand together on and off the soccer field.

  4. Katongo was jus too personal with his comments on supersport, he truly failed to show certain level of maturity required of him. he thinks without him Zambia can achieve less. Zambia is bigger than a bitter individual. by the way this guy Katongo has a congolese accent. maybe thats the other reason.

    • i think some of you are just ungrateful and bitter for reasons only known to you.Chris is 1005 right in his analysis. You cannot play your most effective striker deep in midfield, its a tactical blunder.Mwaba shani mwe ma Zambian no lupato!

  5. What can we say. The team performance was mediocre that’s a fact, but lets not go on harping about the past we need to look forward. I am in agreement with Billy. Sate should not start the next game. Evans should start the next game. He did more in 10 / 15 minutes than Sate in 80 or 70 minutes. To me Evans is clearly a better player than Sate. Mayuka was average again but we have no depth on the bench so we just have to live with his average performances. Chisamba was rubbish yesterday. He did nothing in attack. He should be on the bench in the next game. Kalaba was more focussed on defensive duties so that diluted his offensive qualities. in central midfield we are seriously missing something. i hope Sinkala is fit for the next game otherwise we are screwed not sure about his injury. it did not look good. Otherwise Donashano will have to step in and his past performances do not give confidence. The defence has to be maintained. Mbola and Nkausu had some lapses but they are the best we have in those positions same goes for Sunzu and Mtonga.

  6. We need Lubambo musonda and not Chisamba Lungu. Lungu did not have a nice game.

Kalaba did not come to the party. Mayuka was not well fed.

But I can confirm that DRC was too good for us.

  7. per matches played yesterday, I can honestly say chipolopolo is the worse team and I don’t see them progressing to the next phase.wish them luck though but that is the truth.

  8. The problem with the technical bench is they don’t read the game as it progresses,

    > Since DRC players were stronger than ours, the players would have been told not to hold on to the ball for longer periods.

    > Quick 1-2 passes would have countered the physic of the Congolese.

    > Alas, stray passing is the order of the day in our team.

    > The team has no energy.

    > All faces on the bench including Kolman does not exude confidence.

  9. Although Katongo was sometimes saying the truth, he was saying it with a lot of anger. Why is he so annoyed that he was left out when we all know that he is a finished player?
Coming to Mr Janza, please be serious with your tactics. How can you play Sate Sate as a striker behind Mayuka instead of the other way round. And the midfield was pathetic to say the least. Kalaba was no were to be seen and Lungu was just running aimlessly around the pitch. No creativity from the midfield and no through balls to the main strikers the entire match. What a useless midfield we had last night

    • I didn’t see any bitterness in what Katongo was saying. He was merely stating facts especially the use of Singuluma as a midfielder! Assuming Katongo was in the team and was introduced in the second half! Do u know what that was going to mean? Stability to the midfield u I.dio.ts, which that midget Sate failed to provide. Don’t tell me Sate is better than chris or half fit fwayo. Chris as an impact player is able to unsettle any team with his aggresive runs up front and helping in defense!

      • that is you opinion! and its not mature, just like your Katongos betterness. he is a spent force! Sate is a good player, only that Janza miss placed him.

  10. PATHETIC Honour Janza is one of the most confused if not the most confused coaches we have ever had. The team has no identity. He has no game plane. The team play is too narrow. They don’t seem to utilize the width of the pitch and seem not create enough chances in a game. They are very sloppy, lethargic, the midfield is non existence and pathetic. We are DOOMED with that chap as coach!

    • Did you two clash over a girl friend? You are losing your head sir over something that is national? We all want Zambia to win, but we wont hung ourselves if Zambia loses! Considered seing a psychiatrist?

      • I am here to offer checks and balances and saying things as they are. Its such a shame that we have sloppy individuals like you who seem to accept mediocrity and live in a fantasy world. We are not going to qualify to the second round. Get that into your thick scope! We all know that this is a national issue but a spade has to be called a spade!

    • atleast your comment is almost objective for once. but don’t still insult the coach as it is a learning curve. should he continuous with such mediocrity, then you can attack him fully. give him chance. give the team chance. but overall, they need to improve. trust me material is their. that is our best currently. what is required is motivation and tactics.

  11. When i said that this was one of the weakest AFCON teams that we have ever assembled in 50 years, i was insulted and called names. I speak my mind out and call a spade a spade and not a big spoon. These bunch of small boys will be destroyed by Tunisia. They will be skinned and eaten alive!

  12. Pipo, Zambia did not play as bad as people make it sound…DRC are no push overs, they have players who are better exposed than ours e.g. Bolasie plays for Crystal Palace and scores while our Mayuka doesnt even feature on the bench for Southampton… and in that game it was evident that Mayuka is not at his best…the midfield was exposed as Mulumbu (West Brom) controlled it…what with Singuluma misplaced in the middle of the pack, Mulumbu pulled the strings there and we could not hold on to the ball for long periods with wayward passes and we are lucky we even drew…Janza needs to have tactical awareness…what we need are pacey players upfront and on the wings…Lumbambo should start in the next game and not Chisambo (loses the ball easily)… Mtonga should play alongside Sinkala and Kangwa should be the topman supported by Singuluma. Nkausu should be in his regular spot as right back… I see weaknesses in Mbola so he need a different left back so that Kalaba can have a free reign.

  13. It’s Ok to draw with drc no shame in that it’s a credible result let’s move forward and see how we can collect points now from teams which are weaker opposition. Zambia’s midfield was pathetic and this is why I said we lack strength in depth in midfield. Janza has made a poor team selection a lot of us have been complaining. Felix katongo and even fwayo were required. Rodgers kola should have replaced ngoma. However, we need to work with what we have. Mayuka is a good player and Janza must partner him with evans Kangwa. Mayuka should be dropped in the hole. This guy is clearly not an out in out striker he links play with the midfield well and should thus play in the hole. My worry is midfield we do not have good central midfielders. I feel kalaba should play centrally and lubambo musonda should take his place on the wing. Kalaba like Mayuka strays too much offside. Lobahm and Janza need to seriously work on the midfield.

  14. If we as fans are bitter with Janza for his poor selection and tactics, what more a guy like Katongo who knows that he could have a much better job than some of the players that are representing us right now? Give him a break, most of you could have done even worse than that, I for one think Chris can do a better job as a coach than Janza .

  15. sate sate hes a goal pocher they is now u can play him a second striker, from the first minutes mayuka chisamba & sate sate were just running we needed to replace them with mukuka lubambo & evans Kangwa, with this we wud have seen another goal. as a results of these passengers we had alot of pressure which resulted to a congolies goal & injuries to our player sinkala & sate sate. mr janza learn to read the game, now that sinkala will be out next lineup shud be kennedy, davis, Mbola munthali, stophila, kondwani, lubambo ,kalaba ,mukuka, Kangwa, & singuluma.these players can try & give us something at afcon but not the best players, janza failed to select players for afcon. dont even think of giving him even one month contruct. suck him just from there.

  16. You cried for a local coach, you have one. You said Chris has tired legs, he was dropped. You cried for Given for years, he was included. You cried for sate, sate, Kangwa, who have what you wanted. Stop making noise. Some of you like Kay Hammer, John said Zambia will lose all the games. Zamfoot also said, zambia had an ugly jersey, Kalu brought the old one.

Remember 2013? The two teams in our group reached the final. I am hoping for a Zed/DRC final

  17. These Zambian players are good enough to reach the semi-finals, but the main problem is the coach. Honour Janza seems to be operating more from tactical theories than what is happening on the pitch. He has maintained the same formation that he was using during the qualifiers and I do not see him changing it. Those who are hoping Janza will change the formation and bring in an extra midfielder will be disappointed. Zambia’s problem is clear to all that we are being outnumbered in midfield and that the coach can’t make timely and practical substitutions. Kalaba, Chisamba and Sate sate should not have completed that match

  18. I think most of us underestimated DRC… They’ll continue causing problems because there are an unknown quantity….A few of them are playing their first AFCON but are well established in stronger European leagues(definitely stronger than African leagues where mnost of our players are)..Mputu is no longer indispensible.

  19. I did not watch the first half as i was travelling. However, I watched the second half and one thing I noticed was that our team was never comfortable on the ball and did not have a plan for our neighbours who came off the blocks with everything they had on us. Most of the second half we were back-pedaling as Congo DR pressed forward. Mbola committed a fatal school-boy error and we got punished harshly for that as Bolaise shot home with aplomb.
I cautioned against selecting players who pretended to be fit just to be included in the final team. My rudimentary assessment is that, by the time we have played our last preliminary game, we will have more casualties. I am not the team Doctor but I doubt the fattiness or rather recovery from previous injuries of players like Sunzu, Sate Sate, Nathan Sinkana and one or two other players. It is very unlikely that these players had completely recovered from their previous ‘Knocks’ and this might actually explain why they seem to be under-performing. This will further compound our already precarious position and not so impressive performance. Watching that game (second half), I found it difficult to establish what Janza’s end in mind was. It was not easy to see what system he was playing. If we have ‘midgets’ in the team and then you just throw them onto the pitch on a TO-WHOM-IT-MAY-CONCERN basis, we will get punished. We looked sufficiently intimidated by the more imposing Congolese. We completely lacked confidence and we could hardly string more than three passes without losing the ball to our opponents. At Clubs like Barcelona, it is an ‘immortal sin’ to graciously lose possession to opponents.
Whilst we have been complaining about fielding midgets but you will agree with me that, when we are playing madaala football, we do not like playing young midgets. Why? It is because they are usually very fast, fluidy, dodgy and energetic but our young boys seems to have all but these traits. To say the least, the heavy-looking Congolese were more agile than our boys and we should thank heavens we managed to walk away with a point. Janza should come out clean and come up with a winning strategy instead of complaining about our poor passing game. In any case, whose job is it to ensure that the team is playing a good passing game? It is not his job? Our current team can, and will only win a game by applying a proper strategy and not through playing as usual as was the case with yesterday’s game.

  20. “WE WANT A LOCAL COACH, WE WANT NEW YOUNG PLAYERS”. YOUR CRIES WERE HEARD BUT NOW U R THE SAME PEPO INSULTING THOSE U CRIED FOR. ZAMBIANS AWE SURE.

  21. The game against Tunisia wil decide our fate nd yesterday’s game gave us a hint. We need real changes to the team. Our midfield showed us why we lost. Positives are tht we drew nd Negatives r tht we wr outplayed in the middle our strikers wr out of sight. Let’s solidify our midfield add some pace in our attack then we can beat Tunisia. I agree wit most of da bloggers interms of tactical changes 4-2-3-1 and I agree wit CK11 on singuluma. CHICHETEKELO FYE

  22. i expected a tough match from Zaire now Drc, although i must admit Zambia vs Zaire has always been tough and playing a team with exposed player was not going to be easy, but all in all, a lot of work has to be done, ever since sinkala went to europe, he has not been the same, he looks so tired and out of form, he cannot put up accurate passes, he cant dictate the midfled and he seriously needs to up he’s game.

Chisamba lungu has never impressed apart from being a player full boy on the pitch, to many of incomplete passes and misplaced passes….Mbola is anther suspect.

  23. Spade a spade, leave katongo alone just like any other hez got every lizon to express his bitterness especially that those selected cannot perform better and deliver for our nation.katongo still remains the best player reader amongest some of whom you are calling young players

  24. sate sate is beter than evans, sate only needs 1short/chance in a game to score. Evans likes running we can use him in the second half when our opponents get tired

  25. Singuluma was a second striker and not a midfielder.
Kalaba and Chisamba, were the other midfielders.
It was a distorted 442 formation which looked more like a 4231 formation.
Chris did not read the coach’s motive. Unfortunately, we failed to keep possession. This was not just due to the formation, but due to misjudgement by the players. you cannot make long ground passes across t and expect them not to be intercepted. normal practice is you pass to the one closest to you who distributes it to the other player on the other side of the pitch.
Furthermore, Kalaba and Lungu should have protected the right and left backs by being more relentless in attach. they were off. Mayuka at times was on the wing. how can the attacking striker drift to the wing? who will score?

Ons solution to the possession problem, would have been to replace the striker in the hole with Kalaba. he clearly has an eye for the goal and also is good with the ball at his feet. The midfield would have been packed, leaving the two holding midfielders with less to do.
the wing where Kalaba was , would be filled with Lubambo.

The other option would have been to bring in Mukuka for singuluma, or, take out mayuka, put Kangwa
For me, Chisamba and Lungu were a

    • Lusangu you are incorrect. The striking pair was Sate Sate and Mayuka. Given played as a “number 8” in midfield. The 4-2-3-1 formation will best suit Zambia. The back line – Nkausu, Sunzu, Munthali (or Katebe), Mbola
      Holding – Mtonga and Donashano
Three Midfielders – Kalaba, Given, Lubambo
Attack – Mayuka (or Evans or Sate Sate)

Bench Chisamba for the Tunisia game
