Shonga brace propels Orlando Pirates to victory

Chipolopolo striker Justin Shonga scored a brace to help Orlando Pirates to a 4-2 win over Chippa United in the South African ABSA Premiership League.

The former Nkwazi striker’s brace included a cracker.

Shonga was named man of the match.

Chippa United took the lead in the 18th minute but Pirates equalised in eight minutes later.

The two sides went to the break tied 1-1.

In the 72nd, Shonga scored his first of the afternoon to give the Soweto giants a 2-1 lead.

The game was not done as Shonga’s goal was cancelled out by a Mashengo strike in the 83rd minute.

With the game headed for a draw, Pirates restored their one goal cushion through Lorch three minutes later.

The 21 year old Zambian striker then sealed the win with an injury time goal.

The Petauke native has now scored three goals in 11 appearances for Pirates.

Pirates move second on the log with 36 points from 22 games.

Leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are on 40 points while Pirates’ Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs are third on 35 points.

    • That’s true. The coach has given him time to grow into the league. Another coach would have already started benching him for lack of goals.

  1. Indeed if it was those SA coaches they would have been benching this young man I watched the entire game what a beauty of a goal he scored from outside the box

  2. It was so sweet to go to the Mandela Bay Stadium to watch our very own. It would have been complete if Augustine had also featured.
The icing on the cake was the 2 beauties from young Justin.

  3. The second goal from Shonga was sensational. Very similar to the famous goal scored by the Brazilian Nelinha at FIFA world cup in ’78.

  4. That goal Shonga scored is a rare gem and very few strikers opt to shoot from such an angle. The last player I saw shoot from a similar angle was Harry Kane. For a second striker, coach Micho plays him too deep and that is why he has not got more goals. He is often asked to provide a lot of cover in midfield and that deprives him of more scoring opportunities. Weldone!
