Red Arrows claimed the Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield after goalkeeper Charles Kalumba saved a late penalty to secure a dramatic victory over league champions Power Dynamos.
The Airmen prevailed in a closely contested encounter between the winners of last season’s two major domestic competitions, with Power Dynamos having lifted the league title and Red Arrows winning the ABSA Cup.
Both sides were without several key players because of injuries and international commitments, providing an opportunity for their fringe players to stake a claim ahead of the new season.
Power Dynamos made the stronger start and dominated possession, with Salulani Phiri dictating play from midfield as Joshua Mutale, Frederick Mulambia and Chifundo Mphasi repeatedly tested the Red Arrows defence.
Kalumba was called into action in the 12th minute, producing an excellent save to keep the Airmen level.
Power continued to create openings and came close again before half-time when Mutale found space in the 44th minute, but his effort drifted wide.
Red Arrows coach Chisi Mbewe responded at the interval by introducing Yusuf Saddam Phiri and Angel Lubamba for Paul Katema and Mumba Phiri.
The changes brought greater balance and control to the Airmen, although Power Dynamos remained the more threatening side and Mutale was presented with another opportunity, only to miss the target.
Against the run of play, Red Arrows finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute.
Ackim Mumba stepped up for a free-kick and produced a superb strike that beat Power goalkeeper Josphat Lilanda, who was left rooted to the spot.
Red Arrows almost doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Mumba embarked on another dangerous run. Joseph Phiri had the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt but lifted his effort over the crossbar.
Power were then handed a lifeline in stoppage time when Nickson Mubili brought down Linos Makwaza inside the area, earning the league champions a penalty.
Ronel Manyanga stepped forward with the chance to force a shootout, but Kalumba produced the decisive moment of the match, saving the spot-kick to preserve Red Arrows’ lead.
The final whistle confirmed Red Arrows as Charity Shield winners, giving the Airmen the first piece of silverware of the new season.
For Power Dynamos, their dominance in possession and territorial control ultimately counted for little as Red Arrows showed greater efficiency in the decisive moments.
