Power Dynamos fined K100,000 over political chants, handed suspended stadium ban

Power Dynamos have been fined K100,000 by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Disciplinary Committee for political chanting by supporters during their MTN Super League encounter against Nchanga Rangers.

The Kitwe giants have also been handed a suspended three-match ban from playing at Arthur Davies Stadium following the incident, which occurred during their Week Two fixture on Sunday, 11 October 2026.

In a verdict released on Sunday, FAZ said Power Dynamos had breached Article 3 of the association’s constitution, which prohibits political slogans at football venues.

The disciplinary proceedings followed reports that a considerable section of Power Dynamos supporters repeatedly chanted political slogans from the stands during the match against Nchanga Rangers.

The incident came a day after similar chants were reported at Nkana Stadium during Nkana’s league fixture against Makeni All Stars, prompting the Premier League to demand an explanation from the clubs.

In a response to the charge, Power Dynamos condemned political chants and acts of indiscipline, acknowledged its responsibility to promote appropriate behaviour among supporters and expressed regret over what it described as an isolated incident.

The FAZ Disciplinary Committee subsequently found the club guilty and imposed a K100,000 fine, alongside a three-match suspension from using Arthur Davies Stadium, which has been suspended.

This means Power Dynamos will not immediately be required to play their home matches at another venue, but the suspended sanction could be activated if the club is found guilty of a similar offence in future.

The decision forms part of FAZ’s efforts to keep football grounds free from political activities and preserve the neutrality of the game.

Nkana Football Club have also been fined K100,000 for similar offences following political chants during their match against Makeni All Stars on 10 October.

However, Nkana received a more severe suspended sanction, with the committee ordering the club to play its next five home matches at a neutral venue at least 300 kilometres from Nkana Stadium, without spectators. The sanction is partially suspended and will only take effect if the club commits a similar offence in subsequent matches.

Both clubs have the right to appeal the respective decisions within 72 hours of receiving the verdicts.

FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya welcomed the disciplinary committee’s swift action, urging football stakeholders to ensure that stadiums remain places of unity rather than political confrontation.

“I would like to thank the Disciplinary Committee for the clarity offered on the matter and hope that our members have picked up lessons from this episode,” Chakatazya said.

“Football is a huge source of joy for the majority of our people and cannot be turned into a political battleground. It is our prayer that stadia will continue to be a safe haven for our people.”
