Patson Daka scores again…As Salzburg win ahead UCL playoff return leg

Zambia national team forward Patson Daka returned to his goalscoring ways this afternoon as he netted the third goal to seal Redbull Salzburg’s 3-1 over SV Ried away at the josko ARENA in Ried Im Innkreis in an Austrian Bundesliga matchday 3 encounter.

Coach Jesse Marsch made seven changes to the team that beat Israeli outfit Maccabi Tel Aviv away on Tuesday. 18-year old Croat, Luka Sucic made his first start for the Austrian Bundesliga Champions starting on the right side of midfield with Noah Okafor on the left while Mohammed Camara and Majid Ashmeru started as twin defensive midfielders.

Salzburg started strong with Sucic, Koita Jerome Onguéné, and Mergïm Berisha all caning close. Berish finally broke the deadlock at the death of the first stanza finishing off a pass from captain Andreas Ulmer.

The Germany U-21 forward struck again eight minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. Ried pulled one back in the 83rd minute thanks to a well-executed finish from Julian Wießmeier.

Salzburg however sealed the win at the death restoring their two-goal lead thanks to a close-range finish from second-half substitute, Patson Daka. The Zambian was put through by Ashmeru and with a lot of space in the box, he picked his spot and netted his third of the 2010/2021 Austrian Bundesliga League season.

Daka has now scored in each of the three opening league games for Salzburg and seven in five appearances in all competitions. Salzburg has also maintained a 100% start to the season.

Daka’s compatriot Enock Mwepu was an unused substitute, Marsch resting his midfield dynamo ahead of the bigger task of qualifying to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Next for Salzburg is a Champions League play-off second leg clash against Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Redbull Arena on Wednesday.

Szoboszlai for Okafor (63.), Daka for Koita (63.), Kristensen for Wöber (73.), Adeyemi for Berisha (73.), Farkas for Ulmer (83.)

  1. Congrats to the speedy young man Daka for scoring again in the closing seconds, and helping to seal the win! It’s good also that Mwepu got a rest. The best thing is that both are healthy after their precarious trip to Israel. I am expecting big things in the Champions League qualifier from both of them on Wednesday, and excited to watch them on TV here in Colorado with the famous Mexican announcer who will be saying “Gooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaa” when Daka scores!
