Uganda Cranes interim head coach Morley Byekwaso will this evening have a final chance to show what he can offer when the team faces Zambia in an international friendly at the Hamriya Stadium in Sharjah, Dubai.
Byekweso was appointed on a month-long deal to guide the Cranes in their two international friendly matches against Mali and Zambia.
Byekweso’s reign however started with a loss as they succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Mali in Bamako on Friday night.
Second-half substitute Lassine Sinayoko scored the goal in the 74th minute from the penalty spot.
Meanwhile, Zambia are also coming off a similar result at the hands of seven time African Champions, Egypt.
Byekweso’s contract ends on 31st October and he needs to win or at least a good performance against Zambia to put himself ahead of the pack.
Uganda parted ways with head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic and his entire technical team last month following the Cranes’ failure to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be hosted in Ivory Coast.
FUFA received a total of 245 applications for the Cranes Head Coach position.
His opposite number, Avram Grant has also revealed that his team wants to win every game.
With Byekweso looking to make his final audition count, the match is expected to be fiercely contested.
Uganda is using the match to prepare ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that begin next month.
The Cranes are in Group G alongside Algeria, Guinea, Mozambique, Botswana and Somalia. They will start their campaign with two clashes in Guinea and Somalia.
Zambia, on the other side, is preparing for the World Cup qualifiers against Congo and Niger.
They are in Pool E with the two nations, Morocco, Tanzania, Niger and Eritrea.
Besides, they will use the match to fine-tune for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group F fixtures against DR Congo, Morocco and Tanzania.
