National Heroes Stadium Turf Passes Inspection

By Chansa Kunda, ZNBC

The pitch at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka has been certified ready for use and is set to host its first match in July 2026.
This follows the rehabilitation of the stadium’s hybrid turf after it was damaged by an army worm infestation last month.

Speaking after inspecting the pitch this afternoon, Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary KANGWA CHILESHE said it is encouraging to see the progress made in restoring the playing surface.

CHILESHE said the resumption of full operations at the stadium is something many Zambians have been eagerly awaiting, as the Government works to ensure the facility complies with FIFA standards.

He said significant resources have been invested in restoring the pitch and that the two remaining roofing panels will be installed soon, with delays attributed to administrative procedures.

Meanwhile, contractor MARIUS VAN NIEKERK said once the turf becomes fully operational, it should not be used for non-sporting events unless a protective cover is installed.

VAN NIEKERK said the pitch will require regular maintenance, including specialised treatment every three months, depending on the level of use, to preserve its quality and longevity.
