Mweene saves penalty in Sundowns final game

Kennedy Mweene saved a penalty for Mamelodi Sundowns in their last game of the 2015/2016 season to help the champions to a 1 – 0 win over Platinum Stars.

When the team sheets were released, the Zambia number one was not in the starting XI but he benefited from an unfortunate injury to Uganda goalie Dennis Onyango during the warm up.

Mweene ably stepped in to earn only his 5th cap of the season and showed that his reflexes are still top notch when dived to the left to save a well taken spot-kick to keep the scores level.

The win saw Sundowns earn a record 71 points from 30 games.

This is the second time Mweene has won the league title with Sundowns.

Mpumalanga Black Aces won 1 – 0 against Free State Stars.

Collins Mbesuma lasted 73 minutes as he failed to add to his 14 goals this season.

The 32 year old striker was playing his 29th game of the campaign in a season he has shown consistency and good form.

Mukuka Mulenga was on the bench. He ended the season with 5 caps for Aces.

Davies Nkausu played the entire game ending the season with 12 games under his belt despite joining the team in the in the second half of the season.

  1. After Ghana’s Medeama FC walloped Sundowns in the Confederations Cup, it was only natural that they gave Mweene a chance. These South African clubs are seriously overrated.

  2. Good sign that most of our senior players are winding up on a high. Just curious about Kalengo who seems to have gone cold of late…….or is it that the Congolese ( Brazzaville) has come wound up for the season??

  3. Mweene Is Always De Best Goal Keeper, Zoz Who Knw Him Wud Agree Wth Me I Jst Dont Knw Why He S’ Been Underated At His Club Over D.Onyangu? I Think Its Jst Time For Him To Mov On And Keep His Form Alive Now That ABSA Season Has Com To An End. Hw Abt King David? I Mean The Man Has Proved Himself Zat He Stil The Best Striker By Wining De Golden Boot And That He Jst Deserves Som Respect In S.African Premier League Bcoz He Records For Its Self.

  4. Jesus said to his disciples, go out and spread the word, where they don’t accept you, dust off your sandals on their door mats and go elsewhere, where you will be received.

If Mweene takes this as advise meant for him, then in him we still have a chipolopolo keeper for the next 10 years. Like wine, goalkeepers mature with age.

  5. Since we getting nothing new from Zamfoot, lets in the mean time share info we have gents.
    1. Nkausu’s coach at Freestate stars has resigned for personal reasons. In the last games of the season this coach showed a lot of confidence in Nkausu which saw him get game time closing out full 90 minute games as the season closed. FS stars closed out the season 12th on the 16 team log, this has been one of their worst seasons in the PSL. Hopefully the new coach can get them back into the top eight next season and show as much faith in Nkausu.

    2. Collins Mbesumas coach Mushin is one of the nominees for coach of the season after the amazing turnaround he brought to the club who at one point were log leaders. They finish 4th on the log with exactly same points and goal difference as 3rd placed Platinum stars. They only got pipped by Stars scoring more goals than them thus missing out on a spot in the CAF games. This is a season Mbesuma made history and it is expected he will receive special recognition at the awards ceremony when he is awarded the golden boot.

    3. Kennedy Mweene’s Sundowns have been drawn back into the CAF champions league after CAF disqualified AS VITA. This will cut the rest period of the Sundowns team quite significantly and with Onyango carrying a slight injury is a big opportunity for Kennedy to reclaim top spot on the pecking order at the club. It is very likely that Pisto will not release the player with this new playing schedule. Pitso who it largely tipped to win coach of the year has three of his players and Kennedys team mates nomited for the three top awards. Kennedy has once before won goal keeper of the season.
This means that the Southern region has two teams in the group stages with Zesco united.
