Mweemba eyes strong response against Senegal after Morocco draw

Copper Queens defender Lushomo Mweemba has praised her side’s spirited display in their opening Group A match at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024.

Zambia played out a 2-2 draw with hosts Morocco in a pulsating opening encounter at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday evening, earning a point against the Atlas Lionesses.

Reflecting on the performance to FAZ Media Monday morning, Mweemba said the team showed character and consistency throughout the match.

“We played well as a team in the opening game against Morocco despite missing some chances that could have won the game. We were communicating well even in portions where we were under pressure, but we played with a fight until the end of the game,” Mweemba said.

The focus now shifts to a crucial second group fixture against Senegal, who come into the match buoyed by a 4–0 victory over DR Congo.

Zambia and Senegal last met at the WAFCON 2022 quarterfinals, where the Copper Queens prevailed 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, a result that sealed Zambia’s historic semi-final qualification and a FIFA Women’s World Cup spot.

“The game against Senegal will be tough because they are coming from a win against DR Congo and have three points. The second Group A game against Senegal is important and we need to win the game,” Mweemba noted.

“We have played them before at the last WAFCON. We know their style of play, but we need to prepare adequately because the game will not be easy. Thank you to the fans for the support, we felt it even here in Morocco. Keep believing in us, we are fighting for you, and we will keep working hard to make the country proud.”

The Copper Queens will face Senegal on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 at 18h00CAT at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammédia.
