Lwandamina Appointed Chipolopolo Interim Coach

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed veteran tactician George Lwandamina as interim head coach of the Zambia National Football Team, popularly known as Chipolopolo.

Lwandamina will be assisted by Oswald Mutapa Jr, who currently serves as head coach of Power Dynamos, following changes made to the national team’s technical bench.

According to a statement issued by FAZ Acting Deputy General Secretary Iva Lengwe, the changes are aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening the team’s overall performance.

The decision comes after FAZ opted to excuse former interim coach Moses Sichone in the aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

FAZ has also relieved Perry Mutapa of his duties as assistant coach after he served as part of the technical bench at the continental showpiece.

“Only the positions of head coach and first assistant have been affected by these changes. The rest of the technical bench remains unchanged and will continue carrying out their respective responsibilities,” Lengwe said.

Lwandamina returns to the Chipolopolo dugout having previously served as national team coach between 2015 and 2016 before making way for Wedson Nyirenda. He is currently in charge of Nchanga Rangers.

His immediate task will be to lead Zambia at the Four-Nation Tournament scheduled to take place in Francistown, Botswana from March 23 to 31, 2026.
