Guinea Bissau shock Gabon, Burkina Faso hold Cameroon

Debutants Guinea Bissau snatched a shock 1-1 draw with a last-minute goal against hosts Gabon in the opening match of the 2017 African Nations Cup in Libreville.

Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired the Panthers ahead early in the second half.

In the other match Burkina Faso came from a goal down to earn a point in the 1-1 draw with Cameroon.

However, Gabon failed to build on their advantage as Guinea Bissau grew in confidence during the latter stages and earned a point from the Group A tie when defender Juary Soares sent a diving header into the far corner.

After a low-key first half, Gabon upped the tempo following the restart as Tours midfielder Denis Bouanga saw his goal-bound effort saved.

The hosts finally made their pressure pay on 52 minutes.

The ball found it way out to Bouanga on the right side of the penalty area and his low drive back through the six-yard box was stabbed in by Aubameyang at the far post.

The Stade d’Angondje had suddenly found its voice as the home side continued to press.

The Panthers were in again on 68 minutes as Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina got away down the right, but his cutback was blasted over the crossbar by Aubameyang

However, Guinea Bissau – who had qualified for a first major international tournament ahead of the likes of Congo and Zambia – weathered the storm.

Substitute Frederic Mendy headed straight at Gabon goalkeeper Didier Ovono following a deep free-kick.

The equaliser came in the final minute of normal time when a free-kick was floated into the right side of the Gabon penalty area, and Soares guided it into the bottom corner.

  1. I was impress with the fighting spirit of guinue bissau. cameroun and burkina faso should be carefull because this team can cause an upset most of they players plays they trade Portugal.I’m sure the selection of they players to the national team was extended even to other countries because I saw some camerounians in that team so our FAZ presdent should learn something from those guys let’s give players like idriss mbombo the zambian citizen that guy can add value to our team but knowing how incompetent and useless our faz presdent is he can’t do that

  2. When you look at the France national team that won both the world cup and the european cup in 1998 and 2000 the core of that team was made of foreigners here in zambia we have players like idriss mbombo and walter bwalya these guys have never represented DR congo at any level so we can take an advantage of that.but the problem is with our FAZ presdent who has no vision to run our football during his campagn he promise the councillors a lot of things that he is yet to fulfill mr kamanga the honey moon is over its time to work

  3. u guys walter bwalya is an average player. I have never seem what the clout about him is all about. lets see wher he goes from here. am positive he’ll be finished by next season.
