At times we are reminded that there players in the new look Zambia national team whom many people think were spotted after the Gabon Air Accident in 1993.
Players like Evans Sakala aka ‘Savas’, others called him Rambo were actually getting call ups before the disaster.
Not the most skilled player, but he was solid and reliable.
Reliable in the sense that he could play in many positions something that was rare at the time. He was versatile.
A player that City of Lusaka FC Strong man at the time (circa1989) Masiye Masiye loved so much.
The most memorable was when he scored a long range shot from a distance something that Zambian fans missed for a while since the passing of Derby Makinka.
Sakala featured for Zambia in the 1994 African Cup of Nations final against Jay Jay Okocha’s Nigeria.
The unkind happened the following year 1995! He picked up an injury that left his career limping. Played in South Africa and Saudi Arabia as well. Evans Sakala!
The loyal workaholic for Zambia.
After a long spell at Napsa Stars as a youth coach, Sakala had stints at Nchanga Rangers.
He is currently at lower tier side Airport Warriors.
