Know Your Goalkeepers: Davies Phiri’s shot stoppers

Pressure is mounting on Zambia’s goalkeeper’s coach Davies Phiri.

The former Zambia, Kabwe Warriors and Golden Arrows goalkeeper has to deliver a top class goalkeeper.

It is now almost a decade when the debate of finding Kennedy Mweene’s successor was first mentioned.

To date, only current first choice Toaster Nsabata has shown that he can do the job at international level.

Lameck Siame, Sebastian Mwange and Allan Chibwe have been tried but to no avail.

Lawrence Mulenga has been around in the national team for some time but he is yet to convince.

For this training camp, Trident’s Francis Mwansa and Victor Chabu have been given the chance to work with the legendary Phiri.

Despite being a second choice goalkeeper at his club, Mwansa found his way into the Zambia U23 and won his first cap against Egypt in March.

For Chabu, he is a wild card. Interesting on how he develops and if he will remain at Nchanga Rangers next season or try to force a move to a top flight side.

Phiri has been in and out the Chipolopolo set up since 2008, it’s time he sorted out the Chipolopolo’s goalkeeping problem.

Phiri is currently Amazulu’s goalkeeping coach.
