Kitwe derby ignites Ndola: Power, Nkana set for high stakes clash

The stage is set for one of Zambian football’s fiercest rivalries as Power Dynamos and Nkana FC lock horns in a blockbuster Kitwe Derby this afternoon at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

With pride, history, and crucial league points at stake, the Week 28 encounter in the MTN Super League promises fireworks as the defending champions look to tighten their grip at the summit while their bitter rivals aim to reignite their campaign.

Mutapa: “We’re Firing on All Cylinders”

Power Dynamos head coach Osward Mutapa has struck a confident tone ahead of the derby, declaring his side ready to deliver.

“The boys are ready for it and the whole squad is in good gear to go,” Mutapa said during the pre-match briefing in Kitwe.

Backed by a strong run of form, Abayellow sit comfortably at the top of the table with 55 points from 25 matches and will be eager to maintain their advantage. Captain Salulani Phiri reinforced the team’s title ambitions, stressing the importance of securing maximum points.

“We know it’s a derby, but our focus is on winning and maintaining the gap at the top,” Phiri said.

Nkana: Heart Over Form

Despite sitting 10th with 31 points from 27 matches, Nkana are not short on belief. Assistant coach Josphat Nkhoma insists the derby presents a perfect opportunity for his side to respond after a difficult spell.

“Derby games are different… it’s about heart. Those with a big heart will carry the day,” Nkhoma said.

Acknowledging Power’s dominance this season, Nkhoma remained optimistic about his team’s readiness.

“They are the best team right now, but what matters is how we respond.”

Key Battles and Players to Watch

Power Dynamos will rely heavily on Kenyan striker Moses Shumah, who leads the scoring charts with 17 goals. He will be supported by the likes of Prince Mumba, Fred Mulambia, and Samuel Bamidele Ayodeji.

Nkana, on the other hand, will look to experienced names such as Harrison Chisala, Clement Mwape, and attacking duo Idriss Mbombo and Lazarous Kambole to rise to the occasion.

History Favors Power, But Derby Writes Its Own Script

Recent history tilts slightly in favour of Power Dynamos, who have won 16 of the last 34 meetings compared to Nkana’s 10, with eight draws. The last encounter between the two sides ended in a 1-1 stalemate back in November 2025.

However, as is often the case with derbies, form and statistics may count for little once the whistle blows.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00hrs, with fans across the country expected to tune in for what promises to be a thrilling chapter in the Kitwe Derby story.
