Chipolopolo legend Isaac ‘Gattuso’ Chansa is confident the Zambia National Team will qualify to the 2023 Ivory Coast TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking ahead of next Tuesday’s group stage draw, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder said the team, under the tutelage of Croatian Aljosa Asanovic is capable of being one of the two best teams in the group and book their place for the Ivory Coast showpiece.

“I think we have to forget what has happened in the past and look to the future. The future is now and obviously they (players) have to keep themselves ready for the preparation even as every camp starts,” the 2012 AFCON winner said.

“The players have to be ready and positive that this time around we will do well and we are definitely going to the AFCON.”

Chansa called on fans to show patience with the team and rally behind them from the first match to the last in the qualification race.

“I just want to urge the fans to be patient with the team especially the Chipolopolo because football is a project. We have a new coach now; we have to support him and everyone behind the team,” Chansa said.

“It starts from them (fans) because if they play a big role, then the players will be comfortable on the field of play and express their talents.”

The group stage draw for the 2023 TotalEnergies AFCON will take place on Tuesday, 19 April 2022 and teams across the continent will discover their group stage opponents for the qualifiers.
