Wamundila: Green Buffaloes’ title chase still on

They last won a match on November 20th, 2021, a 2-1 home win at nkoloma stadium against a struggling, Konkola blades.

They toppled Buildcon at the summit of MTN/FAZ super league on 26th September 2021 in week 4 after beating Red Arrows 2-1 with goals from Nicholas Mulilo and Friday Samu.

After 3 months of being the leading team on the log, on 8th January 2022, they surrendered the mantle to Red Arrows. They are now on an 8 match winless streak in which they have scored 12 goals and at the same time conceded 15 and to make matters worse they have lost their talisman and Zambian super league-leading top scorer Friday Samu to Maritzburg United of South Africa.

It looked like their season to bag the super league for the first time in 41 years but things are not looking promising despite a bright start to the current campaign. Are they still in it or hope is lost?

The ZamFoot Crew was at sunset stadium the home of the bankers for a week 20 fixture between zanaco and Green Buffaloes. Goals from Abraham Siankombo and Jack Ngulube made sure spoils were shared after a 1-1 draw.

After the match, The ZamFoot crew caught up with Gift Wamundila of Green Buffaloes for an insight as to what is transpiring at the club.

To almost every soccer fan,the title has already slipped out of the hands of Green Buffaloes but is it true?

“We are very much in it, the gap between us and the topping team is minimal so we will fight till the last game, we can’t let this league just bypass us just like this awe(No),” Wamundila said.

They say every problem has the inception or the cause rather,is it the same case with Green Buffaloes fall in performance but Wamundila feels it is just a normal setback which they did not anticipate.

“We didn’t anticipate such a rough patch this season so wouldn’t say or point out at anyone as being the cause of the results we have recorded in recent weeks but I think we need to change our mindset that even us we are capable of winning the league,” he said.

“I think it might be the issue of mindest and we need to tell even our junior players to have the same mindset like ours that we can do this. If only we work together and put in our best then we will do wonders and achieve greater things,” Wamundila added.

The fans are getting worried and some think the title is sleeping away but the defender believes they should not be too worried as they title race is still on.

“I think it’s nothing that the fans should get worried about, it’s just a bad patch we are passing through but if we get our heads together of which I know we will, and assuming that this is part of the game. We will be a team that not any team will wish to play against like we demonstrated at the start of the current season,” he said.

Speaking on the zanaco game, a match in which the army side were expected to redeem themselves with atleast a win against an inconsistent zanaco FC but all they could settle for was a draw and Wamundila had some things to say.

“We just gave them a goal which we would have defended, zanaco isn’t a team we should be struggling to beat, even them they know this. We could have easily taken maximum points but football being what it is,they are lucky that they even got a point but for us it is a setback because we came for a kill.”

Green Buffaloes hasn’t won a single match in the last 8 games, losing four and drawing the other four. Buffaloes have only collected 4 points from the last 24 available.
