Green Buffaloes strengthen squad with Phiri and Hanongo signings

Green Buffaloes Women Football Club have strengthened their squad with the signings of experienced defender Vast Phiri and promising teenage centre-back Lweendo Hanongo.

Phiri joins from ZESCO Ndola Girls on a permanent transfer, bringing considerable domestic and international experience to the Zambia Premier League Women’s Super League side.

The defender has represented Zambia at major tournaments, having been called up for the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the delayed 2020 Olympic Games.

She was also part of the Copper Queens squad at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and featured at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Green Buffaloes described Phiri as a “strong, composed and disciplined defender” whose experience and leadership will strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.

The club have also completed the permanent signing of 18-year-old Hanongo from Driven Queens.

Hanongo has risen through Zambia’s youth national teams and represented the country at the 2024 and 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cups.

She was also part of the Zambia side that won the 2024 COSAFA U-17 Women’s Championship before progressing to the Under-20 national team, where she remains involved.

Green Buffaloes said Hanongo’s arrival would add “quality and energy” to their defence as she continues her development at club level.

The two defenders give Green Buffaloes a blend of experience and youth as they prepare for the new season.

Phiri’s international pedigree provides experience at the highest level, while Hanongo represents one of the emerging talents from Zambia’s successful youth international pathway.
