The ongoing standoff involving Chipolopolo striker Fashion Sakala, FAZ president Andrew Kamanga, and national team coach Avram Grant has reached a critical point one that has now drawn the attention of the Zambian government.
Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu, speaking on Talk of The City on Lusaka Radio, confirmed that while the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) holds the primary responsibility to handle such matters internally, the government can no longer sit on the sidelines as the situation threatens to undermine national football interests.
“Ordinarily, we let footballing bodies handle their internal matters. But when accusations and counter-accusations begin to disrupt the harmony of the team and when public trust in the system is shaken we must step in,” Nkandu said.
The controversy intensified after Fashion Sakala publicly accused FAZ president Andrew Kamanga of dishonesty. This came in response to Kamanga’s claim that Sakala’s return to the national team hinges on him mending fences with his fellow Chipolopolo teammates.
Sakala has been absent from national duty since January 21, 2024, and his continued exclusion has sparked debate among fans, pundits, and now, political figures.
Minister Nkandu emphasized that public investment in the national team gives the government not only a financial stake but a moral one.
“We inject resources into the team with the expectation of results. If Fashion Sakala is one of the players who can help deliver those results, then it becomes necessary to understand what’s going wrong,” he explained.
While he maintained that no formal intervention has yet taken place, Nkandu signaled that the time for hands-off observation may be over.
“The nation deserves transparency. The players deserve fairness. And the fans deserve results.”
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on FAZ, the government, and the trio at the heart of this dispute, with hopes that egos can be set aside for the greater good of Zambian football.
