Government mourns Zambia football legend Freddie Mwila Snr

The Zambian government has joined the nation in mourning former national team captain and coach Freddie Mwila Snr, describing his death as a major loss to the country’s football fraternity.

Mwila died at the age of 80 at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka in the early hours of Monday, 2 November, after suffering a stroke, his family confirmed.

In a statement issued on Monday, Minister of Youth and Sports Likando Mufalali said Mwila had served Zambia with distinction as both a player and coach, making an immense contribution to the development of the game.

“His immense contribution to Zambian football will forever be remembered. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Mufalali said.

The minister said government recognised the role played by football greats such as Mwila in shaping the country’s sporting history and creating opportunities for future generations.

He also conveyed his condolences to the Mwila family, the football fraternity and the nation.

“As Government, we join the football fraternity and the entire nation in mourning this great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” he said.

Mwila was one of the pioneering figures in Zambian football, enjoying a distinguished career that took him from the domestic game to professional football in the United States and England before he became one of the country’s most accomplished coaches.

He was among the first Zambian players to turn professional abroad, joining Atlanta Chiefs in 1967 alongside fellow countrymen Emment Kapengwe and Howard Mwikuta.

He helped the American club win the league title in 1968 and famously scored twice in their 3-2 victory over English champions Manchester City on 27 May that year.

Mwila later joined Aston Villa with Kapengwe in August 1969, marking another milestone for Zambian footballers seeking opportunities in Europe.

At international level, he made his Zambia debut in 1965, aged 18, and went on to captain the national team in the 1967 Jamhuri Cup triumph over Kenya.

He was also part of the historic Chipolopolo squad that reached the final of the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where Zambia lost to Zaire after a replay. He finished his international career with 15 goals.

His influence on the game extended beyond his playing days. As a coach, he guided Power Dynamos to the 1991 African Cup Winners’ Cup title, making the Kitwe club the first and, to date, only Zambian side to win a continental inter-club competition.

Power defeated Nigeria’s BCC Lions 5-4 on aggregate, recovering from a 3-2 first-leg defeat with a 3-1 victory at Arthur Davies Stadium. Mwila also led the club to the domestic league title that year, completing a historic double.

He later coached several Zambian clubs and Botswana’s national team, while also serving as an assistant coach for Zambia at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mwila was among the figures involved in rebuilding the national team following the 1993 Gabon air disaster. He was appointed Zambia head coach in November 1996.

His death marks the loss of a football pioneer whose achievements as a player and coach helped shape the history of the Zambian game.

Government said the country would continue to honour those who had dedicated their lives to sport and helped inspire future generations.
