It has been 50 solid years since Power Dynamos football club was birthed in 1971 thanks to an idea by Meyton Kaira and former football referee and Copperbelt Power Company, CPC, employee Arthur Davies.
And half a century later Power Dynamos who are popularly known as ‘Aba yellow’ is the only Zambian club to have won a continental trophy.
The club has won the Zambian super league title 6times, with 7 charity shield titles and 2 Barclay’s Cup titles now called Absa Cup.
In midweek the club celebrated its 50th anniversary, and to help celebrate the day, the club treated its fans with two mouth-watering games and a celebratory event later on.
The celebration started with a game between power dynamos legends and Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) madalas .
This brought about excitement to the fans who were so happy to see familiar faces of club legend’s.
These faces included people like former National team coach Wedson Nyirenda, Green eagles coach Aggrey chiyangi, former national team goalkeeper kalililo kakonje, Former national team defender Elijah Litana, coach Tenant Chilumba not forgetting power Dynamos head coach Mwenya Chipepo and his assistant Linos Makwaza just to mention a few.
The squad also included Kellies ‘pay master’ Mwaba, Douglas Chiwaya, Noble Bwalya, Francis Kasonde, kamuzati Kabwe, Emmanuel Chimpinde and many others.
The legends showed some great skills and proved they still have It in them.
Nevertheless, the legends couldn’t convert their skills into goals as they only managed to net 1 goal from the many chances they got. The game ended 2-1 with the CEC madalas carrying the day.
In an interview coach Wedson Nyirenda said the Golden jubilee was worth celebrating, because the team came from nothing to what it is now.
“Power dynamos has done alot of things for this nation, it is called baby born with teeth because it has won a lot of trophies.”
Wada also acknowledged the mark the numerous former players left at the club.
“When we came to this club, we knew what the culture and prospect were, so we had to take charge and continue where the big men like micheal Musonda, Alex Chola left,” he said.
“And the best thing happened, as we brought the trophy home and we still hold the record of being the only club in Zambia to win the Africa Cup winners’ Cup,” he added.
In another match it was a kitwe Derby reloaded as Power dynamos played Nkana, a game which had the majority of players with less game time.
Kennedy Mudenda who was honored before the start of the match, played for a few minutes and was later substituted.
With not much action seen in the first half from power dynamos , Nkana dominated played in the first stanza but things took a turn in the second half.
A goal in the 54th Minute from Kunda Mazinga opened the scores putting the hosts in the leaad. Power had several chances to extend the lead but they failed to utilize.
Nkana equalised in the 94th minute, and it was the former Lusaka dynamos player Tady
