Chipolopolo captain Rainford Kalaba only managed a consolation third position at the Glo CAF awards in the CAF Africa’s best player based in Africa category which was won by Dennis Onyango of Uganda.
Pitted against Mamelodi Sundowns’ Khama Billiat and the Sundowns goalkeeper, the Zambian attacking midfielder who scored seven goals in seven games to help TP Mazembe to the 2016 Confederations Cup title was third behind winner Onyango and runner-up Billiat who are both 2016 CAF Champions League hold medalists.
Onyango was in fine form through the year for both club and country.
He relegated Chipolopolo number Kennedy Mweene to the bench at the club as he dominated proceedings between the sticks
This the second time he has failed to win the award after he was against  nominated for the 2012 award together with Stopilla Sunzu which was eventually won by Mohamed Aboutrika.

Kalaba will not be satisfied with third best. Russia here we come. But hey the guy is a hero – what a glamorous stage! Onyango and Billiard are very good players i would agree. Mahrez gets the CAF player of the year…that’s it….excellent staff from CAF.
Still KALABA is number 1.
The Onyango is because of Japan chaapwa.
Kalaba would have won this one if chipolopolo had qualified to afcon 2017.. Its because of that useless coach chicken.
It’s about time Zambians stop attending this CAF GLO awards im not trying to take anything from Onyango and Billiat but it just seems dodge that MASTER KALABA can never be fully rewarded for his attributes in African football, like our former Coach said (Renard) they CAF want a pretty picture they think we are not good enough, just sum it up look at how Sunzu was treated at the same Glo awards a couple ago. Rainfold Kalaba thanks for putting us Zambians on map don’t let this deter your energy and love for football and Zambia for you have a god given talent not even CAF can take that away from you.
Playing in the Congolese league has disadvantaged the master. Hard luck Kalaba never lose hope and keep working hard
kalaba deserves recognition for his outstanding performances for TP mazembe over the years. Overlooked again – not fair.
From the very first time, we speak the same language in terms of the comments… these awards were not fair at all. Did you see how that loser of a goalkeeper was embarrassed at levy Mwanawasa stadium when Sundowns came to play Zesco? And he goes on to win the award? Anyways, Congrats master..
Taking nothing from billiat and onyango
First caf don’t consider confederation cup serious as opposed to champion league cup
No matter how good you are in confed cup you will still come second
Second the people who votes have been given a propaganda from caf what to look for in a player there on its own is a bias way of voting
That’s yaya toure called these awards a joke
If qualifying teams to afcon is the basis then a lot of players should have been considered
BULLSHIT! Kalaba deserves the award! Though this is the fallout from the Chicken coach and Kalu the fraudster; they orchestrated Chipos failure to qualify to Afcon2017, in their blind persuit of discrediting Kamanga and gain some form of revenge.
Watch your language young man even when you’re frustrated it doesn’t mean you go sarcastic
