Francisco Mwepu becomes first Zambian to play in La Liga

Zambian striker Francisco Mwepu made history on Wednesday as he became the first player from the Southern African nation to play in the Spanish top flight, La Liga.

Mwepu was called up to the Cadiz senior side after being hit with injuries following his impressive performance with the B side that has seen him score seven goals so far this season.

The former Sturm Graz player came off the bench to play the last 20 plus minutes after coming in to replace Theo Bongonda in the 70th minute.

However Cádiz CF left their visit to the Estadio de La Cerámica de Villarreal empty, thanks to a brilliant brace from Nicolas Jackson in the first half was enough for Quique Setién’s team to beat Sergio González’s team.

Shortly before the halfway mark in the first half, a clearance from Villarreal turned into a long pass for Nicolas Jackson, who took advantage of a defensive mismatch to, after dribbling past Conan Ledesma, scored the first goal of the game.

Another defensive error allowed  Nicolas Jackson to get his brace and make it 2-0 after dribbling past Conan Ledesma and scoring an empty goal.

Meanwhile the win almost seals Villarreal’s UEFA Europa League slot while Cadiz are still fighting relegation with two matches left to play.
