The Football Association of Zambia –FAZ- has entered into discussions with key stakeholders to renegotiate the payment of outstanding funds owed to former Chipolopolo coach, ALIJOSA ASANOVIC.
This follows FAZ’s loss of an appeal in which the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, in 2023, ordered the association to pay 1.1 million US dollars to ASANOVIC for breach of contract.
In 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport wrote to FIFA, directing the suspension of funding to FAZ until the full amount owed to ASANOVIC is paid.
FAZ President, KEITH MWEEMBA, says FIFA’s decision to restrict funding has severely impacted football development in Zambia, preventing the association from executing many of its planned activities.
MWEEMBA says this is why the current FAZ Executive, with FIFA’s support, is seeking to renegotiate with ASANOVIC in order to find a more manageable payment solution.
Speaking to ZNBC Sport, MWEEMBA stressed that the 1.1 million US dollars owed is a significant sum that could completely exhaust the association’s finances.
ASANOVIC was appointed Chipolopolo coach on 18th January 2022 but left the position in September the same year.
