DRC in remarkable fightback as controversial penalty keeps hosts in tournament

Democratic Republic of Congo progressed to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final after producing a thrilling fightback to beat Congo 4-2.

Dieumerci Mbokani scored twice as Democratic Republic of Congo produced a remarkable fightback to beat neighbours Congo 4-2 and reach the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

DR Congo looked set to bow out when Ferebory Dore and Thievy Bifouma put Congo in command of Saturday’s quarter-final at Estadio de Bata, but Florent Ibenge’s men responded from two down with stunning effect.

In the late kickoff, hosts Equatorial Guinea were awarded a last minute controversial penalty which was converted to send the game into extra-time with both teams level at 1-1.

The hosts buoyed by the partisan home crowd struck in extra time through a well taken free kick in the first stanza of the extra time.

The ugly scenes of the Tunisian players angrily approaching the referee at the end of the game was a clear indication that the Tunisians felt cheated by the referees decision to award a penalty at the death of normal time.

  1. After watching the Tunisia game, I have to ask if Equatorial Guinea actually feel good about themselves after being awarded the second softest penalty I have ever seen in AFCON. Tunisia was straight up robbed, and to give to a team that was only at AFCON after being banned for fielding an ineligible player…if they make the final then honestly it will be a dark day for African football.

  2. That is the way African football is. DRC for me are a team on the rise and if they keep their feet on the ground in the semis, i wont be surprised to see them in the finals and winning it. They need to convert to those chances early on and had they done that this was going to be embarrassing for Congo Brazzaville.
For the Tunisia game i didn’t watch it.But since we are in Africa, am sure money exchanged hands.

  3. Drc was the best team in zambia’s group and for me Tunisia was lucky to go this far because zambia just had a slip In concentration. Drc are possible title contenders I was shocked to come and see Zambians complaining on this site about the draw with drc. Despite the fact that Janza is not a great coach and his team selection was poor the boys did the best they could. The pitch in ebiybeyin was unplayable not even Messi could play on that pitch.
