COSAFA Women’s Championship: Copper Queens lose on penalties

Full-Time Scores,
Tanzania WNT 1-1 Zambia WNT (Lushomo Mweemba (OG) 17’ | Grace Chanda 69’)
(Tanzania wins 3-2 via penalties)

The Zambia Women’s National Team on Thursday afternoon failed to make it to the final of the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa after losing 3-2 on post-match penalties in the first of the two semifinals played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

Zambia Coach Florence Chalesa Nkatya Mwila maintained the same line-up that edged Uganda 1-0 in the last Group Match.

However, Thursday’s performance was below par for the Copper Queens who were coming up against Twiga Stars who had all to play for in this encounter.

Zambia’s Defender Lushomo Mweemba scored an own goal in the 17th minute after failing to clear the line in the box to make it 1-0 to Tanzania going to the break.

After resumption, the Copper Queens came back more rejuvenated side and it was captain Grace Chanda who equalized with a superb goal from long range to make it 1-1 and that was enough after 90 minutes and the match had to be decided on penalties.

Elizabeth Mupeso and Agness Musase converted their spot-kicks while Margaret Belemu, Lushomo Mweemba, and Ochumba Oseke Lubanji missed.

Tanzania converted through Lunyamila, Suleimani, and Tukumbuke while Amina Ally missed.

Zambia will now have to redeem themselves in the 3rd and 4th playoff on Saturday 9th October 2021 against hosts South Africa who were shocked 3-2 by Malawi. Tanzania will face Malawi in the final set on Saturday afternoon.

The 3rd and 4th Playoff will kick off at 12:00hrs while the final will be at 15:30hrs on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.
