The Zambia Under-20 Men’s National Team this afternoon gets back to business at Wolfson stadium in Port Elizabeth in search of their second win when they face Comoros in a Group B match.
Perry Mutapa’s boys started this year’s COSAFA Under-20 Championship with a 1-0 win over Namibia and meet a Comoros side who succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Young Flames of Malawi in a tightly contested affair.
With top spot assuring a semi-final spot alongside the best placed runner up, Mutapa is targeting an outright win against the Islands.
“It’s (the match against Comoros is) a very important game but obviously we have to collect maximum points. The game against Namibia is gone but we playing a team that’s desperate for a positive result hence we have to work hard to get a victory,” he said.
“Of course you have to improve in every game you play, we concentrated a lot on the final ball and putting the ball in the back of the net in training. They are only picking one team per group hence going into today’s game we have to score more than one goal and win. The last game against Malawi will be another tough game, the crucial game at the moment is this one.”
Kabwe Youth Soccer Academy goalminder Patrick Chooma is expected to keep his place between the sticks with Andrew Phiri, John Chishimba, Mathews Chabala and Golden Mafwenta making up the back four.
Skipper Prince Mumba is likely to start ahead of Patrick Gondwe partnering Muma Mumba in midfield with the hero of the opening match Golden Mashata and Martin Njobvu likely to start on the wings.
Ricky Banda and Jimmy Mukeya are expected to partner upfront. Peter Banda and Elliot Kampukesa have put in a strong case in training and could be given a starting berth by Mutapa.
Only the top team in each pool as well as best-placed runner-up advance to the semifinals, while the two finalists at this year’s competition will win a place at the 2021 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
The top four sides in Mauritania will win a place at the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Indonesia from May 20-June 12, 2021.
