Copper Queens set to face Mozambique in an international friendly match

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has clinched an international friendly match for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics bound Women national team against Mozambique.

According to a statement from football house made available to the ZamFoot Crew, The Copper Queens will square off with Mozambique on 28th May away in Maputo.

“Our Copper Queens will play Mozambique on May 28, 2021, in Maputo. We are in talks with other teams to play our senior Women National Team as part of preparations for the Olympic Games and the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,” FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala told FAZ media.

The Copper Queens are in camp preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 Morocco Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. They started their preparations in November last year when they beat Chile 2-1 before going on to lose 3-1 to South Africa earlier this month.

They went on to beat a local assemblage of Women football stars 4-1 in April after their proposed friendly match against Kenya was canceled.

Zambia will face neighbors Malawi in the first round of the AWCON qualifiers with the first leg set for between 7th and 15th June, while the second leg will take place between 7th and 9th October.

Meanwhile, The Copper Queens are among 12 teams that have qualified for the Olympics and are the only representatives from Africa. Bruce Mwape’s lasses were drawn in Group F and will face Brazil who is making a seventh appearance at the tournament, Netherlands, and China who will set an Asian record with their sixth participation at the biggest sports festival that kicks off in July.

The Olympics will officially run between 24 July and 9 August 2021, but sporting action kicks off two days before the opening ceremony with preliminary women’s football matches set to light up the occasion for various sports disciplines.
