Copper Queens expected back home this afternoon

The victorious Zambia Women’s national team is expected to arrive this afternoon following their stellar outing at the 2022 COSAFA  Women’s Championship. 

Bruce Mwape and his lasses are expected to land at Kenneth Kaunda international Airport around half past 12 : 00hrs. 

Coach Mwape expects a warm welcome for the triumphant Copper Queens squad. 

“Now we are leaving Port Elizabeth after winning the trophy and we are now COSAFA Champions and we are taking it back home. Our players are excited. We expect a warm welcome,” he said.

“This is the trophy for the fans, yes even the players but we need to take it to the fans, the FA and the government who have been supporting us throughout.”

Meanwhile midfielder Ireen Lungu says the team need to build on their regional success and prepare well for the World Cup. 

“Everyone is happy. It feels awesome to go back home with a trophy because our fans were expecting it and we grabbed it,” she said.  

“This is the first team to win the COSAFA Women’s Championship so it feels awesome.  The tournament was okay we met different types of players and we learned a lot. Our level is high because we have participated in different tournaments which helped us a lot.”

“Now what we need is to keep working hard because we are going into a tougher tournament, the World Cup. I want to thank the fans for their support. It is what has made us reach the final. Thank you very much for your support and us as the Copper Queens we will endeavor to always deliver good results,” she added.

Zambia edged South Africa 1-0 to win their first ever COSAFA Women’s Championship title. Barbra Banda scored a beautiful header in extra time to seal the victory.
