Copper Princesses start COSAFA title defense with a big win

The Zambia U17 Women’s national team started their COSAFA U17 Women’s Championship title defense with a bang thrashing Botswana 5-0.

Coach Naomi Phiri named a strong squad with Lucy Kajiya, Namute Chileshe Bwalya, and Mercy Chipasula leading the attack.

The Copper Princesses started strong but could not find the back of the net until the 20th minute when Bwalya Namute Chileshe beat the Botswana goalkeeper with a brilliant chip. Blessings Zangose Zulu doubled the lead two minutes later.

The Copper Princesses went to the break with a 2-0 nil lead.

Substitute Harriet Matipa added a third in the 60th minute with a powerful shot from outside the area.

Bwalya Namute Chileshe made it 4-0 in the 72nd minute before Jessy Zulu could complete the emphatic win.

Brace hero, Bwalya Namute Chileshe was named as the player of the match.

The win means Zambia is yet to lose a game to Botswana at the U17 COSAFA Women’s Championship in four meetings.

Next up for the defending Champions is Comoros on Monday at the Bingu National Stadium at 10:00 hrs.
