CAF CL: Zesco’s Clatous Chama out of Wydad Casablanca match

Zesco United will be without star midfielder Clatous Chama when they host Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in the final group A match of the 2016 competition.

Zesco United have confirmed that Chama is suspended for the match that will decide who tops the group.

”Chama accrued his cautions on June 29 in Zesco’s 2-0 away loss to Wydad and in the 2-2 draw on the road against Al Ahly in Suez on August 12,” a statement from Zesco United stated.

This is Chama’s second suspension in the competition after missing Zesco’s last 16 clash away against Stade Malien in Bamako on April 9 that George Lwandamina’s side won 3-1.

Chama is Zesco joint second highest top scorer in continental competition with Jesse Were on four goals one behind Idris Mbombo.

In his place, coach George Lwandamina has the option of bringing in another midfielder Mwape Mwelwa who has often come in as a substitute in during the CAF games.

Zesco United play Wydad Casablanca at Levy Mwanawasa stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Zambian champions need an outright win to secure top position in the group.

The game kicks off at 1630hrs CAT.

  1. At this level of competition mental strengdth is very important especially in away games. Its high time zambian teams started enganging psychologists. Its very important. We allowed silly goals in morroco and egypt because at some point when our boys needed to fight they became jittery.

  2. I hope Zesco win so that they don’t have to face Sundowns in the semi’s. Id prefer an all southern African affair in the finals just to show that the scales have tipped in continental football.

    All the best Zega.

Kalaba has recently been a goal scoring machine for his club. Lets hope Gordon will know how to position him in the world cup qualifiers so that he continues banging them in for Zambia as well.

  3. Cletus Should improve on his discipline. He is disadvantaging the team with his absence. If Zesco had to go for like for like player, I would prefer Maybin Mubanga to Mwape Mwelwa. I just wonder whether he is still with Zesco. He has a similar game to Cletus’s with good movement off the ball. He has obviously advanced in age but the skill remains there.

  4. Zesco hand Were’s siblings invites to Zambia

    By NAIROBI NEWS REPORTER

Zesco United have handed Jesse Were’s siblings exclusive invites to Zambia where they will visit the player and watch him play in a highly billed Caf Africa Champions League game.

Nairobi News can exclusively reveal that the Zambia league champions invited Were’s elder brother Kevin, alongside a family friend – renowned Disc Jockey Chris Darling, to Ndola earlier this week.

The two landed in Ndola and have been put up at a high end hotel.

They will watch Zesco United’s final group stage Champions League game against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca from the executive box at the 50,000 seater Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Wednesday evening.

    GUESTS OF THE CLUB

“They are guests of the club and also visiting their brother. This we negotiated in their contracts. All Kenyan players at Zesco have an opportunity to invite their relatives over there at some point during the season. It is a venture Kenyan clubs should consider introducing for their foreign based players. It will increase their morale,” Kenyan based football agent George Bwana, who negotiated Were’s deal with Zesco told Nairobi News.

Besides the game, Kevin and Darling could also be set for a tour of the historic copperbelt area and the Livingstone tourist site during their week long stay in Zambia.

Jesse Were has been an instant hit at Zesco since switching base from Tusker in a high profile transfer in January. He is currently the club’s top scorer with 16 goals this season, 12 of which have been scored in the league – where he also tops the scoring charts.

Crucially, the 27 year old scored twice against seasoned club Al Ahly in Egypt two weeks ago, goals that enabled his club qualify for the semis of the Caf Champions League for the first time in its history.
