Chansa, Katongo to start against Zimbabwe

Chipolopolo Boys coach George Lwandamina is set to name a strong and experienced side for this afternoon’s Rwanda CHAN 2009 Group D opening tie at Umuganda Stadium in the border town of Rubavu.

The understands that  Lwandamina will start with the African Cup of Nations winning pair of Chris Katongo and Isaac Chansa, with the former leading the line upfront.

While Katongo is expected to play as a lone striker Chansa will be in the familiar role with play-maker Mwape ‘Tozizi’ Mwelwa and either Benson Sakala or Salulani Phiri in the engine room.

Outwide, left footed Mwila Phiri Junior will start on the right and Clatus Chama should get the nod ahead of Spencer Sautu.

The ZamFoot Crew understands that Lwandamina is not likely to tinker with back line comprising three Green Buffaloes players – Stephen Kabamba, Buchizya Mfune and Adrian Chama, who is also a futsal Zambia international.

Dauti Musekwa is expected to start on the right full back as his deputy Donashamo Malama is suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in the qualifiers.

In a late kickoff Mali take on Eastern African representative Uganda in the other Group D fixture.

Zambia last featured at CHAN in 2009 in Ivory Coast and won bronze.

  1. Lineup is as expected. After having watched mwila phiri jnr at a few training sessions here in johannesburg i have to say the boy has something about him (x-factor)- he is intelligent and has a sweet left foot. Given a few more international games his best will come out. Isaac Chansa should also be put back in the main chipolopolo team despite his age. The guy still has it and no player in Zambia is his equal in that box to box midfield position. i expect only a win today.

  2. It will be close but Zimbabwe will win this one. Zambia have good administrators as evidenced by the sound preparations for the tournament but not so good footballers whilst the opposite is true for Zimbabwe. Odds of 3.45 on a Zimbabwe win, 3.0 and 2.05 on draw an Zambia win show Zambia are the favorites but this is a derby and Zimbabwe has stronger clubs compared to Zambia. The best that Zambia can get out of this is a scored draw. My prediction however is Zimbabwe 2 – 1 Zambia.

  3. Katwishi! Prepare yourselves bane.If you have British Petroleum (BP),then don’t watch the game just wait for results or fakani motoka pafupi.Make sure ka engine ka nkhale on.

  4. I don’t believe that Zimbabwe has stronger local teams than Zambia. ZESCO, ZANACO, NKANA and POWER to name a few are teams that can compete with any team on the Continent.
    Zimbabwe has always played second fiddle to Zambia but they always consider themselves better than Zambia, so;
    Let’s wait for the result.
